I kind of know what you mean. I was on a crappy mood this evening for some reason. Kids were being buggers and bickering with the wife. Mate bailed on our planned run.
I just couldn’t be bothered to do any exercise, but it was too nice an evening to not be outside. So I thought I’d sort my old bike ready for new bike. Take pedals, bottle cages, speed sensor etc off. And it was the quiet hour I needed.
The only difference is the fact that I’m crap at it and i normally make it worse or end up hurting myself.
You can buy double the amount of wax for the same price, without the added bicycle tax.

Quite how different it is from the other stuff mentioned I have no idea. But a lot of the MTB boys say how great the stuff is. The tin is hugh so you can easily put it on the hob if you don’t have a slow cooker or fryer to hand. A load of links and discussion on it, on the singletrackworld forum.
New chain arrived today, bathed it in petrol, might give it another bath after. Is the acetone step necessary? i.e. I don’t have any lying around, might not go down well if I usee the wife’s nail polish remover.
I have a spare crockpot in the loft and ordered some cheap wax off ebay.
I did my first waxed chain today, just in a small pot on the hob. New chain, cleaned in petrol then in acetone.
Once dry the chain went very stuff, is there now a settling in period where it loosens up? Also need to shorten it and my chain splitter is fubar, need a new one.
Breaking the stiff chain is actually the bulk of work of maintaining a waxed chain. I usually fit to the bike just before it goes stiff but has cooled sufficiently to avoid having to do it.
Break in from even a fully cooled chain is just a few crank revolutions.
Hmm. If the chain is drying stuck, then cracking as you free it up - surely the bits that are cracking off are the very parts that need the lubrication?
Also, is there an element of sound ansorption rather than just lubrication?
It’s a theory but… Waxing chains is proven lower friction and less wear not much point denying that. They go stiff when they cool coming out of the wax, you’ve got to break the links else it’s not going on the bike.
Some bits do crack off but the wax doing the friction job is inside the links.
