The king is dead, long live the king.

Can’t believe the people’s group set now has an rrp more than £1700. Bikes at that price point used to come with Ultegra as standard. 105 will now be on bikes costing around £3k :face_vomiting:

Watched it on GCN yesterday. As a life long Campag fan, the only road bike I have now has 105 hydro. I was talking to Mrs FP last night saying that I reckon this will be the last road bike I own.

The cost of riding something new and decent is out of control (if you can source anything at all). I’ll keep it going but if for any reason the bike ceases to be, I reckon that’s it.

Traffic/cost/ lack of time and interest has pretty much hit tipping point for me.

Never ever thought I’d write that. I think I rode my first road race about 34 years ago.

Im not into electric shifting or disc brakes.
So I’ll be scouting eBay for my own parts and keeping my current bike stable in business for years to come.

I have one more bike I want to buy, so will have to make a move on that sharpish now :+1:t3:

Can’t believe the difference in price for this and the SRAM Rival Etap. A 2x12 set is £850 on Wiggle and once you add on the cost of the crank, chain, BB cassette and new hub, it still works out about £500 cheaper and is completely wireless, meaning it’ll cost less / be less hassle to fit.

It’ll be interesting to see if they do a cassette, shifters, FD, RD, battery and wires pack to match the SRAM though having seen how petty and penny pinching Shimano have been in recent years, I’d be surprised.

I know, I did say that 105 is the People’s groupset

It’s more, will you even be able to buy it as a groupset for a long time? Even bikes with it on will be on long lead times.

Okay, so here’s the 12sp Di2 105 of my winter bike:

That’s £2,500 :exploding_head:

I paid £1,249 three years ago for that with 105 mechanical.
I also upgraded the tyres to GP5000 and wheels to Visin TriMax 35 (both of which immediately went on the TT bike as training wheels and the crappy Mavics that came with my BMC went onto the Ribble)
In addition to that, I specced the level 2 stem, saddle and bars. Plus full length SKS guards.

I think the base price of the bike at the time was £1,099.

£2.5k for a winter bike is utterly nuts.

It’s a damn fine frame and bike - I really enjoy riding mine, ride quality is superb.
But £2.5k? I paid less than than for my BMC.

Yeah, that’s nuts!!!

I think that Tiagra may step up to become 11 speed and cover both rim and disc. When that does, would be better to compared bike builds to that instead. Will still cost more than 3 years ago but then there’s been a supply chain shortage and rampant inflation.

There’s a weight penalty too
10 speed tiagra is roughly 2.5kg. This new 105 di2 is 3kg

I’ve just found a 56cm ti Enigma Evade, rim brake, for £2.5k. Only done 750 miles. It’s also local (well, Lancaster)

Only problem is that its some silly Italian gears “Campagnalo Chorus” :man_shrugging:t4::joy:

That’s my next bike - 11sp Ultegra titanium rim brake.
Then I’m done (well, I’d like to upgrade the Exocet to a trinity at some point)

Very tempted by the London Road Ti at the moment as a winter/all round steed.

I could get it on cyclescheme for less than a grand.

As long as they keep mechanical GRX I won’t care too much :kissing_smiling_eyes:

In which case, why not just put GRX mechanical on your road bikes? :man_shrugging: GRX 800 is Ultegra mechanical equivalent.

Disc brakes innit.
Plus. It says GRX on it. Not Ultegra/105.

If I am riding on the road, I’ll have road gears.
If I ever ride off road, I’ll be on Manitou forks, with GripShift and STX-RC and fully colour matching anodised parts to match my Klein frame :+1:t3:

It’s just the way it has to be.

Another @Poet oddism

I thought DI2 was a bit of a fad and pointless, until I had a bike with it and now I dont want to ride a bike without it.

Yep, I think that’s usually how it goes. Someone buying Di2 & saying give me back mechanical - not seen yet.

Why?

It shrieks like a tiny hatchling.
Absolute racket.

Same with disc brakes.
They sound like a banshee in the wet.

The only noise you should be able whilst out riding is the pained aguish emanating from your club mates as you obliterate them on every stretch of flat road, whilst they mount a futile attempt to hold your wheel.

Whilst performing that, if you happen to hear the sound of a freehub engaging, this means your not riding hard enough and it’s them letting you know to turn the screw a little more.

The noise of pained anguish is usually loud enough to drown out the sounds of birds, too.
Which is always a winner.
