Bike Maintenance for Beginners

Looking at replacements

Ceramic speed are 140€ each :poop:

Is it worth spending more on bearings or something like this ok?

Probably not. Any efficiency improvements are going to be pretty minor

More for longevity than efficiency. Will just order something reasonable rather than spend unnecessarily

Any sort of drift will knock them out - I used a piece of wood to knock the bb out of my p3 last week

How much?! Thats obscene! The ceramic speed ones won’t have increased longevity IMO.

Regular ones with whichever weather rating you need will be absolutely suitable!

I put ceramic bearings in the BB and wheels of my Cervelo. About 200 all in.

Can I tell the difference? Can I fu…

I would go faster by spending less money on posh crisps.

But you would be much unhappier as a result.

Crisps are life.

Personally I don’t like knocking them out as you risk damaging the shell (on the piss bearing has a bigger diameter) and would use something like this:

But plenty of people knock them out & should be ok if you are careful.

Yeah if knocking out, go with a large socket or something rather a chisel or the like.

Probably my least favourite job. Picked up some unbranded ceramic bearings from a place I’ve used before, bit of loctitite holding compound.

Don’t have a bearing puller so needed to improvise with a chisel and hammer. The drifts I have were perfect but needed to get it deeper in, so used the old bearing.

Took the opportunity to remove and grease the chainring bolts. Probably need to have the pedals out and check them too. Can’t think what else it could be so will take it out soon and see.

This seems like the best place to ask.

Does anybody know if I can swap a spindle on a SRAM crank.

A mate is selling a SRAM Red crank which is BB90 ( TREK ) and I was thinking of buying it but would need to remove the spindle and swap it for a BB30 compatible one.

This must be possible right?

Would it mean anything to anyone if I said it felt like there was more slack than normal in my chain when in the smallest sprocket, big chainring.

There’s a weird clicky noise and sort of rubbing type feeling in the top 2 gears. Goes away as I move up the cassette.

Chain isn’t rubbing on front derailleur as far as I can see. Cassette seems tight. Wheel is right. Cranks and pedals feel tight.

Really can’t work it out.

How old is the chain? Could be stretched. Also inspect the outer ring and sprockets for lateral movement. Ive bent more than one crank in my time and that will cause odd issues.

No idea on the chain. It’s on my tt bike that I bought 2nd hand. So could be that?

Cant seem to sense or feel anything moving in any planes that it shouldn’t.

There is a tool to check how much its stretched but by the time youve bought that you might as well just take a punt on a new chain.

Yeah i can get my mate to check it. Could well be the chain. But using it tmw. So will just have to crack on. I can use that as an excuse for losing like 30 Watts! :joy:

Cheers!

Put your chain on the big chainring and simply pull it forward (from the front of the ring) and see how slack it is

It’s not as bad as my roadie, by a fair bit. And I know that one needs replacing (and new cassette).

Maybe it’s something else. Hard to explain. Oh well, too late now. Will just ride tmw and see what happens.
