Bike Maintenance for Beginners

Are you sure your rear mech has not slipped in any way?

:person_shrugging:t3:
Maybe. How would I tell?

It’s rare that it happens and would likely affect your other shifting but a chain that is suddenly slacker in that gear position is pretty weird.

There is a big hole in the middle of the mech, down the end of the hole there is a hex bolt. Check to make sure it’s tightened.

Will check tmw. Ta.

Maybe slack is the wrong word. I dunno. But something ain’t right! :joy:

Roadie needs new cassette and chain.

Like for like cassette - 11-34 105 R7000 is coming in at £52. I can save a tenner if i want to lose the top two teeth. But they do come in handy on the really steep stuff, as i like to spin up hills.

What’s the deal with chains. The prices range massively. Will an Ultegra chain work with 105? Any brands to avoid? Are there other compatibility issues that i need to look out for?

Needs to be robust vs. super racey, as i’m not a fan of cleaning my bike!

Ta

All 11 speed chains are interchangable. Ultegra is a value/performance combo.

I believe YBN SLA chains are well regarded from a performance and longevity standpoint £30

And just to make things more complex there are 114 and 118 link options?! WTF!

Last one I bought had 116 links, I removed 1.5 of them

This page has good tips for getting the correct length

https://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html#chain

Also if it has the quick links the knack to get them engaged is clip them together , then hold the rear break and and give the crank and good whack to clip it in properly

I’ve only ever bought 114 link chains and even then had to remove a few links, but I only only have a max 32 tooth cassette.

I think there are some calculators out there where you put the number of teeth largest cogs front and rear have and the distance between the centre of the cassette and crank.

OK TT. Stand by.

For tonight, Gingerbongo, of epic mechanical numptiness fame, the forum member with the highest rate of cock ups when trying to complete basic maintenance tasks, shall attempt to change a cassette AND a chain on his bike.

How many different ways can he fuck this up I hear you say. Oh prepare to be dazzled!
