Nah, f that.
£60 for the ring alone. £115 for the whole shebang.
Look after the pennies as they say … (cos i’m sooo good at that! )

What chainset are you seeing for that price?
Just the chainring (is that different?)
105 R7000 52T
Nice - they’ve come down in price since I last looked
closest I could get to a shark tooth
I’ve just bought a cassette, chain and big chain ring to swap over when I start getting some noticeable (chain slip) wear, so hopefully get to about 1 month before Wales before doing the change over.
#humblebrag
Maybe one for the purchases thread as well but got the rear calliper changed on the Propel today so I’ll be able to use that for the 2 races. Got a bloke I know to swap it for me, no rubbing on the brake but I’ve got to get it into the bike box yet, and back out (twice)!
Second most difficult bike thingy I’ve done after freehub bearings with the most evil circlip positioning.
Before and after videos
I need to sort out the Propel when I get back, how did you find it?
Doesn’t look too bad from the YouTube videos I’ve watched.
I’m wondering if I can just burp them though
Other than definitely needing a 7mm spanner rather than anything adjustable was ok. Have you got a bike stand? Hard to do it without.
Also, not sure if the replacement fluid I’ve got is different to what’s inside but definitely not the same colour.
I normally use a turbo as a bike stand, gives me more reasons to swear
I think the Shimano oil is a bit darker?
I mean what came out the top was almost clear.
I noticed the rear tyre on the Enigma was flat when I went onto Zwift earlier. Better that it went down in the garage than when I’m out, although I usually have spares.
Changed the tube and actually discovered the old tube had been repaired which had come off and caused the flat. It’s gone in the bin as the valve was starting to go anyway. Aiming for a longer ride home on Wednesday.
Silly question from me, as always on this thread.
Went to put the training wheels on my tt bike for an actual outdoors ride tmw. But realised I’d nicked the cassette to put on the turbo.
I really don’t want to keep swapping them back and forth. Similarly, if I want to put the road bike on the turbo, I’d have to dig out a 12sp to put on there.
Is there any reason I’m not thinking of, to not to just train with the disc other than a) looking like a twat b) wearing out the tyres/they’re race tyres so likely to be less puncture resistant and c) a flat is going to be much, much more of a pita to repair on the go.
Options?
Suck it up?
Look for a cheap 2nd cassette to put on the training wheel? Would mean doing tmw’s ride on the Canyon or risking the disc.
Something else?
I need to go back to just running. So much simpler
short term:
Long term:
Do you maybe want a wider cassette option anyway?
Yeah that’s a good point. Would give options for the future.
Get a bigger granny gear for Wales!
So, looks like my turbo one (taken off the training wheels) is a 12-25, but the disc is a 11-27.
So looks like I’d have been stitching myself up on the hills with the original setup! Guess i should take the cassette off the disc and chuck it onto the training wheel, and problem solved. Then in a few weeks i can switch back and give the disc a few practise spins.
Hadn’t actually realised that my roadie and the tt were both 11sp. So there’s another option. Canyon has a 11-34 on it!
Would that cause any issues on the tt if I wanted proper spinny gears for the sharper hills? Like are derailleurs setup differently to be able to handle that wider range? Obvs I’d lose some middle gearing as a result. But as it’s so up and down, I wonder if I’ll always either be spinning in a super easy gear or grinding downhill to reach a good ‘no pedal’ point anyway?
Sorry. But I have only rudimentary knowledge about all this stuff! I’ve always just used what was on the bike.
The biggest cog you can get on the back will be dictated by your rear derailleur (and chain length). Someone with better knowledge than me might be able to tell you what your set-up can support - I know when I was playing with my old 10sp CX bike, I needed to try and find a long cage rear derailleur to go bigger than 28, but then a ship got stuck in the Suez and no-one had any bike bits available.
Ok fair enough.
This is a reasonably old bike, and being a TT bike i highly doubt it’s going to be setup to take a granny like a 34.
Will just have to TTFU and ride up in 27.
Did you do LC on your tri or roadie? What setup did you go for?
I did the only acceptable thing and bought a new bike
I was on a 1x gravel set-up with slicks fitted. 40 front, 10-36 back. It was fine for seated climbing to keep the power capped until the final 2 steep climbs up Wiseman and Saundersfoot, but I didn’t have to worry about saving my legs at that point. Depending on the size of your small front ring, I would have said a 32 or 34 would be a nice option.
