The desert is flat AF anyway so time to go single speed
thanks this was the problem
it hadn’t quite fallen out but had worked it’s way very loose. Tightened up and all works again.
While at it noticed the two bolts that hold the derailleur to the frame were loose too, it was wobbling in the breeze which I guess may explain why shifting had been a bit hit and miss recently.
Also don’t know how well it shows but the cap at the top of the headset is half split, feel like no good can come of this so going to try & source a new one.
edit: that’s all 3 camels cleaned, fettled and oiled. Commuter/ TT/ wife’s . Theres no mud but the oily dust on the roads here really gunges up the moving parts if you let it.
and safely back in the stable
Great stuff. Bit of low strength loctite needed maybe. Odd that all those bolts loosened, I wonder if it is heat related.
I enjoy a big bike washing session in the summer… very cathartic.
I have an issue with my Van Nic, and I just can’t trace what’s going on. Hoping the TT hive mind can set me straight.
I’ve always run Shimano 10 speed on it. In December, my rear mech failed so bought a new one. At the same time I added a couple of teeth onto the rear sprocket, putting one on that has a 32 teeth large sprocket, instead of 30 teeth, just to make the Surrey Hills a little easier in my dotage. It’s all tickety-boo when I’m in the big chain ring on the front but when I drop it onto the small chainring, the chain will slip likes it’s coming off the rings as soon as I put any real power through the pedals. I just can’t work out why it’s doing it.
The new rear mech is compatible with a 32 sprocket.
I sized the chain according to Mr Moustache on the Park Tools website, which I’ve done loads of times before and it’s never let me down.
The derailleur is straight. I’m happy with the B adjustment screw, but might it be wrong?
The high and low limit screws are all adjusted ok.
Just don’t know what I’ve done wrong. Any suggestions, please?
Here’s a picture of the bike in the lowest gear. Appreciate any thoughts. Cheers people.
My understanding is that chain slippage under strain is worn chainring(s), although I’ve never worn out a small ring. There does look to be some teeth there which Spielberg would have been happy to have used Just my thought and might be completely wrong.
What @JD-Scarabtri says.
humblebrag
Cheers fella. Ok, will get some new ones ordered. Thanks again!
Both your chainrings are worn out, especially your big ring as @JD-Scarabtri says. Must be your monster watts. I’m always reluctant to replace the big ring as it’s £££ for some older groupsets for OE parts.
IIRC, I didn’t replace the small ring last time I did a major service on the bike, only the big ring. So the fact that the small ring is now playing up, seems to fit with what I’m experiencing.
I’ve just replaced a chain and now getting slippage. Annoying as it’s both chain rings
That’s why you’re getting slippage, the old chain would have been worn into the chainrings so that bit of stretch meant it slotted into the oversized hollows between the teeth.
A new, perfectly spaced, chain rides up the teeth and slips as the distances no longer match.
Ps. When I needed new chainrings I found it cheaper to get a complete new chainset (if you don’t mind the brand/level) as chainrings seem ludicrously priced for what they are.
Ive have this problem too.
New chain exposes the worn chain rings.
Yeah it’s annoying as you know when pull away or drop some power it goes!
I haven’t look yet but Ultegra big rings always used to be a bit pricy.
Those rings do not need to be pricey, it’s only the next generation with the different arms.
9 quid (I think it’s a compact)
But you can certainly spend a bit more
I don’t know if it’s the angle or my eyesight but zooming in on the pic I’m not seeing any shark fins
The little ring you mean? It’s not terrible but looking at the 10-11pm position looks pretty worn to me?
House remortgaged and new chain rings purchased!
What did you go for?
Just repurchased 2 105 chainrings. 50/34. The 34 was £19 but the 50 was £79. I look at it that that’s pretty much 2 tanks of fuel for a car but it’ll last me 2/3years rather than 2/3 weeks.
