Bike Maintenance for Beginners

That’s a racy drop you’ve got on there now!

Have you put the battery down the seat post tube rather than up the seat post?

Battery has fallen out of seat post into seat tube and is blocking it? I’m with you… Di2 is a PITA with the big battery. I prefer the SRAM solution with the little removable batteries myself.

I haven’t touched a battery - I see two wires coming out on the seat post which I’ve poked back into the frame before trying to slot the seat post back in.

Poking my finger in to the frame I can feel a solid bit the visible part of the clamp slot into and under neath a loose-ish piece that I assume is the other part of the clamp.

I don’t think that is blocking it, and I don’t think the wires - which are a total asshole to poke back in - are getting caught. I think it’s the solid bit I first feel…but there’s nothing to adjust.

I tried some carbon paste but makes no difference. It’s just doesn’t go back in.

I need to drop it one centimetre after loosening the the clamp it didn’t go down, hence the reason I took it out in the first place - to wipe it down and check for blockage.

Yes, I’ve tried hitting it, putting my whole 90kg weight on it, and discussing its maternal heritage.

On the latest GCN video in the Hacks & Bodges segment there’s a claim that punctured TPU tubes can be repaired by taking a lighter to an old TPU tube & dabbing the resulting melted part onto the hole of the tube being repaired & hence filling/sealing the puncture…seems a great idea if practical.

Anybody know a few thing to try for a Shimano crank arm stuck on the spindle?

I’ve tried heat, WD40, I am assuming it is a severe galvanic bond (cold weld)

Is Sealey Freeze Shock & Release Spray Lubricant 500ml worth a go. I’ve never tried it before.

It’s obvious if you know, but have you lifted the “stop plate”?..apart from that, WD40 penetrating fluid might help :person_shrugging:

Get some Plus Gas. WD40 won’t do shit.

Spray and leave. Then you might have to cycle heating it and spraying that on. It will catch fire so have a rag handy to

… Also set up a camera on a tripod.

You are correct there.

Stop plate is moved correctly for release.

Done it now, and didnt need to buy the freezer spray.

Heat gun > dust remover (can upside down, acts as freezer spray.)

Hot cold, hot cold, hot cold worked x3 cycles

(Sadly I had to cut the alu non-drive side arm as on pinch bolt was stuck, couldnt drill it, i tried. Cut a slot so the arm opened up) What a job that was.

Saved myself £7.59 on the freezer spray using ‘work’ compressed air (dust remover aerosol) upside down. A trick I have used before for work stuff.

Sadly forgot to bring the grease to work so cant fit the new one yet.

I don’t think I’ll voluntarily introduce fire to my bike maintenance

So lost my rag today and thumped it harder and harder, and even when it started moving I didn’t stop hitting it.

Seems fine now, and at the reduced height I was after. Shifters working too.

Daughter wants to use my cinelli, so wanted to lower the seat post.

It’s steel, so I’ve tried loosening the collar and hitting it with a mallet. Took the seat off and hammered the post directly, sparks flying, wife came downstairs to tell me to stop making such a racket.

But the seat post still hasn’t budged.

New bike?
