Chainring and cassette choices on TT bike

I’ve seen people swap the cogs on a the cassette moved to give better straight line for hill climbing but not the chainset

I was swapping a 53 to a 52 to slightly lower the ratios.

Which is which? I’m working on the assumption you’re holding up the new and original big rings next to one another. The one in the foreground clearly looks very worn to my eye, but not sure if that’s the “new” ebay one or not

The one in front is the ebayed 52. The one on the bike is now the 53 the bike came with, I switched them back during the ride yesterday so that I could finish it. Luckily it doesn’t take long.

That looks proper fubar’d to me!
It’s more of a dolphin-fin than a sharks-tooth

You can quite easily see the wear rate between the 52 and 53 on that photo :open_mouth:

Yep, the one nearest the camera is fooked. It’s not hooked but the pockets are so much wider than the good one, a decent chain won’t line up with them and climb it’s way up until it skips.

Oops, thought it had been set up large ring on the inside.

Wouldn’t want to put too much power on the 52, mine was a little bit further worn than that and the chain slip at traffic lights had me off, a bit embarrassing.

Ha - got you now.

Yeh - I’ve started a return request on ebay. Will see how it goes and I’m pinning my hopes on the fact that it said - “looks like it’s got good life left” which plainly isn’t true.

Trying to find some compatible rings online which don’t cost £100+ like the Shimano ones. Stronglight seem to do them for not too much money.

If it fits 5800/9000 then it will fit 6800 surely? It’s only when you go to 7000/8000/9100 that they don’t work.

Does 53 to 52 make that much difference?

I’ve gone from my road bike with a 50/34 to a 53/39. The main difference is trying to get into the middle of the cassette. 1.5" difference in the 18 tooth
