Commuting & Winter Riding Thread

The way you’re going GB, you may as well go for an Exposure TraceR rear, so that when you buy your TT bike and start doing TTs you already have a rear light that will work for you.

I stick the moon on the seat rails on TT bike - might not be perfect but it feels quite out the way.
I’ve also got one of the moon rings - not blinding like the others (only 25w) - but very small form factor.

Like @mw22 I rate Moon lights highly.

For long daylight & wintery rides I’ve got Moon Alcor (rear) & Mizar (front) flashing away all the time.

For winter commutes & proper dark rides I always run a couple of rear lights as I worry about one failing on me. At the moment they’re battery Topeak ones, but as they die I’ll be looking at rechargeable replacements, possibly like the Arcturus.

Cheers all, i have bought this one (slightly longer battery than the arcturus) …

@PhilleusPhogg :rofl:

Ive moved away from rechargeable , but only because the 2 cateye ones i had seems to fail far too quickly. I think the water gets into then too easily. Probably just bad luck and poor design on the ones I bought

Front I still have an old Fenix TK11 torch as recommended by Towel many years ok. I connect it to bars using an old HRM rubber handlebar mount and some velcro (showing how old now) I also have a cheap flashing front and 2 rear, one cheap one i leave flashing and a “double line” LED cateye that Ive had for about 10 years which is probably the only real bike light that’s ever lasted much past a year of winter commuting

+1, that was a long time ago

one of the best items of “kit” I have bought. used it for running as well on dark nights

Looks like it’s up to the TK16 now …

" this flashlight is perfect for law enforcement, police and soldiers, but also for private individuals for self-defence or during search ops."

Massively busier on my way in this morning.

Roads are back to being full of close passes and “I’ve got to get where I am quicker than you, paltry cyclist”

Yeah, but you nearly took me out on the Cheadle rounadabout swigging your coffee, but I caught you back up at every set of lights in Manchester and made sure I claimed my cycle spot at the lights in front of you :wink:

In a few weeks’ time, my wife will be picking up a new bicycle from Temple bikes in Brick Lane. We were thinking of riding back to Home (Kingston) on it. Does anyone have a bike friendly route between those points please? @stenard @Whisk @JibberJim. I thought we could pick up the Thames towpath at some point to get off the roads but it looks like that would only be from Barnes Bridge. Any ideas would be fab.

Not really, I’d head down to the embankment probably and then zip along, over putney bridge and back through the park. If you want to go river, Joining at Putney bridge is good, the short bit of road before barnes bridge is pretty relaxed, but it’s a lot longer than going through the park.

There may also be some covid changes that would mean staying north and going along the bottom of hyde park and over hammersmith bridge that would work, it’s normally a reasonable route for speed but is busy. But hammersmith bridge is such a screw up I’d avoid it, despite no work going on it’s been designed to be really difficult to cross on a bike.

Cheers mate. Thank you!

I’d ride south until Tower Hill and then head West following the river (my old commute) If you’re picking it up on the weekend it should be pretty quiet car wise until you hit New Kings Road. Tourists stepping out without looking on the cycle lane following embankment are an issue on the weekends. No idea what it’s like post Covid though as I haven’t ridden in town since late March

Just fitted my new rear light. Bought the Moon Comet X for like 17 quid and it is freakin bright. I tested it and stood behind to check the angle etc and my eyeballs are still blinking red!

Great little light for the price. When I next need a front light I’ll deffo be shooting for a Moon again.

Cheers @mw22 and @Doonhamer
