Commuting & Winter Riding Thread

Back on with the big light .

On the plus side the dawn chorus didn’t quite wake me this morning .

Hell yeah!!!
After being woken up between 0500 and 0530 all last week, it’s been 0730 for the past two days!!!

(Did I say I hate the sound of birds?)

Shorts, mitts & changed the overshoes for oversocks this morning. Still a bit fresh, but it’ll be toasty on my return.

Not winter, but a general kit question.

Anyone know what planet x kit is like? I’m thinking basic sunnies, bib shorts and maybe a short sleeved jersey.

I need a couple of bits, but need cost to be as low as possible without being total junk.

Any other brands or sites welcome.

Ta

I had a jacket which isn’t too bad, not the cut & finish of the premium brands but good enough to do the job.

Not sure about the bibs though, I find they can be very individual, I’ve tried things like Castelli and Mavic and just didn’t get away with them, Assos are expensive but worth the money. But I’ve also had Nike & Pearl Izumi in the past which were alright.

I think Shimano kit is alright as well.

They’ve become my go to for a lot of stuff…
But, it is hit and miss from my experience.
Bib shorts I wear the ec130s for everything, but currently at £40. Normally paid 20-25.
Love the baselayers for everything but summer riding (and use the long sleeve for running).

Had some sunnies in the past, ok for price. Bit like uvex brand.

I’ve had a few bits of kit that have all been ok, but bought the bib shorts that they’ve had on offer recently, and they are fantastic… excellent quality, and incredible value for money.

They were the ones I was looking at.

And thanks for the comments all. I think I’ll give them a crack. For 25 quid, they can’t be worse than my 6 year old, knackered altura shorts and even older Orca tri shorts that I’m currently using!

Just got those bibs too and have done 4 25 mile rides with no issues at all. Seem pretty good value.

Base layer tops are great and I’ve had some of the raceline bibs for years, pretty good quality and fit

Ive had some PX merino BL’s for years, the thicker winter ones last forever. the summer tshirt ones, tend to not last too well though so dont use them anymore

Came across this via a friend and thought it was quite neat. Didn’t know if it would be of interest to any of you learned folk?

Considering the amount of rain we had today I’m gobsmacked that I got in & out of work in the dry

First ride into London in nearly 4 months today, on the fixie and a tasty headwind home so hard work. Roads were fucked, busy as pre lockdown but with loads of roadworks on top. They’ve built a segregated bike path all along Jamaica Road, its not finished so is a nightmare currently. Stupid idea of swapping sides halfway along so stuck at a weird set of bike lights when I could just ride in the Road. It’ll be safer at Rotherhithe going home but on my commute it was always OK so a bit miffed why they chose there.

Interesting that London is really busy again. I had an appointment in central Bristol yesterday, and it was very quiet. Normally the traffic is horrendous.

coming home , the road through Greenwich Park is still closed to motorised traffic so the side ride was queueing the whole length. manic at points. I did come home about 5pm so peak rush hour and the fact they’ve tried to fit roadworks in and not finished in time hasnt helped. Quite a bit of “pavement widening” has limited parts from 2 to 1 lane as well around Southwark/London Bridge but this is with temporary barriers rather than permanent.

OK people. I’ve had some great kit review/recommendations so far, so the pressure is on.

Let’s talk rear lights.

Under £30

  • 70% rural roads, 20% lit roads, 10% urban.
  • At the moment, early morning starts and late finishes, so dawny/dusky … but as the days shorten, that’ll start to morph occasionally into full on pitch black i would imagine.
  • No plans for big all nighter’s at the moment.

Rocking an iZone Arc 450 on the front after a recommendation here somewhere, and i’ve been impressed with it. Though it has mainly been used a ‘normal’ torch for putting the chickens away all winter! At least now it’s getting a bit of it’s intended use!

I’ve got no end of Moon rear lights - love em.
Small, never failed, very very bright, lots of mount options, usb recharge, normal amount of flash and steady options. Never had a problem with battery life.

That’s annoying. I just bought some tyres for Mrs GBs bike from Merlin yesterday! Wasn;t thinking ahead!

I actually just ahd a quick dig in the shed and realised the one i currenlty have is the izone pulse rear light. It’s not a bad light, but when i’m on some of the fast, wide b roads, under the tress around a bend. I’d feel a little safer with something more powerful on the back as cars tend to fly around there.

Have seen quite a few of the moon ones on various review sites that seem to get a good rating. Cheers

I like Lezyne stuff, been using their KTV lights on my commute for years. very much in the “be seen” rather than “see where you’re going” category. I like the fact that they charge without any cable so if I forget I can just stick it in the side of my PC at work.
I’ve also got a Femto Duo (double sided light) on the top of my helmet which i think adds a lot of visibility due to the height and movement of your head, compared to a lower fixed position.
