Commuting & Winter Riding Thread

Do you need talc to get them on? :upside_down_face:

It looks like you’d lose 30 mins of your day just getting them on/off!

No, I thought the same having used velotoze previously. They’re very straight forward.

Pull them up your leg first then put your shoes on then tuck them over. Velcro strap at the bottom. They do need to be on skin though to give a decent seal. Similar to the Sealskins socks it seems.

You might pinch a leg hair (if you’ve got any) taking them off.

With my back I sometimes need my butler to help me put on my socks in the morning  . I don’t think i could be fannying with velcro underneath shoes :joy: .

Anyway, back to winter riding…

Luxury Goods

No - the glossies don’t have business information, more puff pieces on faux-feminism or what/who is fashionable for this season.
A lot of what they peddle is paid-for-articles (disguised most of the time - such as Grazia mentioning the film Last Christmas on nearly every other page this week…hmm!), there’s little to no luxury goods in them.

Nice tiling, there.
And I like the winter leg hair

Giving me a shudder just thinking about it - hands down the worst bit of TT’ing, even worse than the racing! They do look trick though. And give your feet a nice sweat bath.

Now the bib tights have come out for this season I thought I’d let standards slip

And then rip when you take them off :man_facepalming:t2:

Really is that good. :+1:

Although I haven’t bought a really expensive one yet, I get hot enough/too hot in base/jersey and gillet in winter. The joys of 20% BF and 170W.

Our son has finally relented and put trousers on this week for school, but he still wears shorts when he can. He resolutely refuses to wear a jumper to school. Obviously takes after me; definitely not his Mum!

Just seen a guy with these on, came up to his knees. Look well dodge

 yeah - must have been the ‘pro’ version

I’ve got the legalz - they’re not too excessive

So, managed to temporarily ‘fix’ my jacket zip for ride home. Managed to get the ‘up’ zip on the runner underneath the reverse zipper and got a safety pin from the office First Aid Kit to hold it at the bottom.

It’s like MacGyver here every day.

Holy crap, temporarily blinded myself turning this light on in my face. In the end just went for the 1w version (75 lumen iirc) of my existing Smart light for £10.99.

Sorry, late to the party and haven’t read all the replies.
I commute twice a week, now that it’s proper winter I’m on the A roads as the most direct route, about 18 miles each way; do a longer version down country lanes with more daylight but it’s proper dark round here and I’ve had a few problems sliding on mud which I can’t see due to lack of contrast (I refuse to blind other road users with overly bright lights).
I’ve found that lots of flashing lights work wonders. I have a cheap two way rechargeable on my helmet from Evans - can’t see it on their website so they may have stopped selling it. This from Halfords looks similar:

I have one of these on the bike:

Bloody brilliant and for £10 almost unbelievably cheap.

I am getting a new front light:

mainly because my current light has a battery pack and it’s a real faff with the cable

Clothing nothing special really. I have £80 endura thermal bibs, a variety of base layers and winter cycling tops. I paid out a fair bit for 3 layer gloves from Hunt but they’re not really that great IMHO.
I do get a bit cold on occasion, finger tips especially but nothing that a bit of finger flexing can’t solve.

I don’t set off if it’s raining or potentially icy - that’s really my only rule.
Big Ted is the person to ask about top level mental winter kit, ice tyres and the like

I set off at 6:30am so pretty much dark all the way in and back from now until late Jan

Does anyone wear casual commute clothes? My new commute will be Bike->Train->Bike. Bikes will have flat pedals so needs shoes and dont want to sit on the train in lycra.
