I live in my gilet - its an old DHB, not packable type. Windproof and with some water resistance on the front, mesh back (but I carry a bag).
I’ve always found it the best compromise for warmth, some water protection but also the breathability.
Can’t find anything to replace it with tho - guess a perfetto gilet might be about the closest.
plastic Sainsbury’s bag works well also ![]()
Riding in the Alps last week, we were climbing the Col de la Croix Fry and just as we were about to hit the “3km at 10%” bit in the middle the rain started to fall. One of the guys I was riding with stopped abruptly.
“What’s the matter?”
“It’s raining. I need to put my rain jacket on or I’ll get cold”
“Maybe try pushing harder on the pedals and you’ll stay plenty warm enough” ![]()
It has to be pretty cold before I’ll wear a rain jacket on a long ride and even then it’s to stay warm rather than to stay dry. I think I only wore my rain jacket for one of the descents last week when it was cold at the summit and we were dropping 1000m over not much distance. Otherwise, I never put on more than a gilet.

Love my go pro session - but it doesn’t last a return journey now; and in winter it barely lasts a single trip with the battery dying.
You use a GoPro for commuting?
Ive been thinking of a GoPro for the front and something cheaper for the back. Had two small shimano cams, literally match box size but they are very outdated now, a ball ache to use and not secure either, I kept losing the front one ![]()
Go pro session. The small cube one thats waterproof without a case.
Sits nicely under bars, pretty obvious.
Just have to manually wipe the mem card every few days.
Can’t find anything remotely as good , esp for what it cost me.
Drift ghost’s good and long enough battery, none of the gopro’s do do they unless your commute is really short?
I’ve got one of these, I don’t think the quality is as good as the main brands but seems Ok to me. My commute is only 15/20mins but I only charge it every few weeks and it constantly overwrites the memory card so no need to wipe manually.

Should be on police interceptors next week… absolutely crapping myself with a cop car screaming between me and a lorry (coming the other way), cop car going crazy fast in a 30!
Cannot wait ![]()
They’ll be on the A453, then on the A616, then on the A608/9, then in the middle of St Anne’s ![]()
That’s what I love ![]()
Fucked up at the weird junction a20 Greenwich and nearly put myself under a car as I totally misunderstood the flow of traffic. Luckily the drivers were on their toes and made space.
It’s been so quiet until Wednesday when the schools went back I guess it was never a problem. ![]()
Wdit: Wish I could find a diagram of this junction, it’s total madness. I have to go round a loop, dismount, cross a pedestrian crossing halfway, then the cycle route starts on the halfway pavement which leads back onto the roads in the spaghetti junction under the A20.
Pondering, as I washed road crap off my commuting legs, whether warmish rain and shorts, or coldish rain and tights, is preferable. Tights you just peel off and are clean but there’s more general sogginess and laundry.
Bib longs for proper rain
Proper mudguards are enough for most summer showers though
Nope. Always shorts.

Did you mean the A2, near the Ikea / Cinema
bad enough in a car around there, the lanes are so badly designed
