Another vote for the marathon plus.
When I ride on roads I get hardly any punctures, but when I used to commute through MK on the redways it was punctures non stop. Seapped to the marathon plus and got far fewer punctures. Also put slime in the tubes as well
32" vs 35" - any thoughts?
Say currently on 28s.
Begeezus - this correct??
Roads are proper floody up in North Somerset. Wouldn’t like to be anywhere near a bike with how deep some of the puddles were that i drove through today!!!
There is a HUGE difference, IMO.
I’ve got 25mm, 28mm, 37mm and 40mm.
25mm are tubed, rest are tubeless.
Go as big as you can and run the lowest pressure the Silca calculator tells you;
Those Marathon+ look awesome, especially with the reflective strip in them.
When I was commuting, I used 28mm Vittoria Rubino Pro G2.0+ and had one puncture.
That was going into Manchester along the canal, and then through glass strewn city streets.
Now - I have these in the gravel version and think that they are SICK
You can get them in a 35mm “road” version and they are rated TOP for puncture protection;
They also come with a reflective strip;
(DISCLAIMER: I might be buying the above tyre for my “racier” gravel/road wheels and using them at DR200)
Its the weight. My commuter is already way to heavy and I hate it. I cant add another 1/2 kg on each wheel.
Those Pirellis look a better option - tho Im not paying £65 for a commuter tyre. I want 2 for that
Even when its almost entirely road?
Getting 51 psi vs 59 psi comparing 35s to 32. Which obviously quite some difference.
Any idea how that affects speed? I’m already going slow enough on commutes
I have zero idea!
Commutes aren’t about speed though, are they?
Ultimately, I want to arrive at work without a puncture and in comfort.
When I punctured, I was on a cobbled “cut through” which was pitch black.
I was riding fixed and it was the rear (always the effing rear, I cannot recall the last time I had a front flat!)
Getting it off, unclipping the guard, then adjusting the chain tension was a nightmare.
Tubeless all the way now (when I can) - far more comfortable and just whack a load of sealant in to cover yourself (literally )
32mm would probably be okay for road, if you are going down to that then…
Conti GP5000S TR all the way
They are peerless - low Crr, excellent puncture protection, amazing grip.
The bigger tyres have a lower Crr and the tubeless puncture protection is better, to boot (self-sealant, less chance of pinch flats, rolling over debris, etc etc)
If you use tubes, then buy these (the guys at Merlin are awesome, too)
No - but I’m finding it depressing as he11 out there at the moment. I want to get from A-B as quick as possible cause its just miserable out there.
But yes also this.
Not sure if my rims are tubeless compatible.
Thanks @Poet
Don’t rule out Gatorskins, they get slated because people race on them and they’re clearly meant for that and giving away minutes, but I’ve ridden on them for years and barely ever had a puncture. I’ve also never had an issue with their grip which I’ve heard complaints about too.
Ps. I’ve got marathon plus on my Brompton and they’ve been great too but no experience of them in grown up sizes.
Your commute is only 35 minutes, though, right?
Even with some beefy Marathon+, you’ll only be giving up a minute or two.
So I go back on what I said and buy them!
I have “spokey dokeys” on my commuter, which are reflective, so I can be seen from the side.
Bike looks mint when I shine my headtorch on it, they really work!!!
It should be… its currently pushing 45. Think last night was an all time personal worst thanks to a combo of really heavy traffic, horrific wind, rain and the darkness.
Yeah Ive got spokey dokeys on my commuter too.
Do have 5000s on both TT and roadie. 4 seasons have been great on the puncture side. So that plus a bit wider, lower pressure seems a known entity for me. That Merlin price is more tolerable too. So prob go down that route.
Commutes are absolutely purely about speed!
Bike was listening wasn’t it… knows I’ve ordered new parts.
99% sure got a slow puncture.
So can either fix it at work, in daylight, with access to track pump - albeit in work clothes and its bl00dy freezing outside. Or gamble its going to get me home.
Annoyingly will be doing tyres again over the weekend to put new ones on.
Sensible option is to do it now… in day light …
Nah, I’d just pump it up and leave it until I get home.
Do you not carry the sealant with you - The stuff for car tyres, with an adapter?
Work an absolute treat!
It does seem to be staying up (so to speak!). Final check and pump in an hour then gambling on it.
What’s the worst that can happen!
THAT IS THE SPIRIT YOUNG MAN!!!
I can’t wait for the rant thread this evening!
I won’t be on the rant thread… cause I’ll be stuck on the A6005 with my hands covered in oil and sh1te trying to swap out a back wheel in the pitch black and howling wind!!
