Commuting & Winter Riding Thread

Third best road in the east midlands, that :slight_smile:
A38, then the A52.

I go with Specialized armadillo on my commute bike.

Absolutely bombproof!

Now the A46 is a dual carriageway, it is my favourite

Made it :raised_hands::raised_hands:

Reckon there’s about 20psi left. Squeaky bum moment when I smacked a kerb a bit too hard.

Tyre completely flat today.
New tyres arrived today.
This all all very convenient, lucky and not my normal standard of bad timing.

Currently having a breather waiting to try to seat both new tyres. How people do this without tools is beyond my comprehension.

How can anybody choose an A road as a favourite cycling road? :grimacing:

Apart from North Wales obviously, where unclassified and B roads often get called ‘A’ roads for a laugh

I didn’t say cycling :joy::rofl:

Where @mw22 lives, there used to be a reliability which went up the A6005, to the A52 to Derby, then followed the A52 all the way to the A5012, then down the the A6 and back to the A52/A6005.

But then some miserable bastards complained that it was “dangerous” - what they really meant to say was “I’m too slow and can’t hang on for fear of death in the front group” :joy::rofl:

It was utterly insane.

And the A38 is MASSIVE. So gets a thumbs up from me (although not to cycle on)

A few years ago, when there was bad flooding all over Surrey we ended up on the A3 on one of our Sunday rides because the roads that we’d normally have been on were all flooded and impassable.

One of the guys in the group was a very good tester ( rode for Sigma Sports and had finished top 10 in the TT national champs) and thought this was great! He sat on the front, powering away, and the rest of us were just desperately trying to hold onto the wheel in front :flushed:. The worst bits were the slip-road entries and exits, where you just prayed to god that anyone leaving or joining the road had seen us :flushed::flushed::flushed:

On a long ride on my own and ended up on the A5. It was fucking terrifying. Parts of it were dual and not busy but cars still didnt bother using the other lane. Whistling past inches from you at 80mph.

Horrific

I worked for a traffic management firm for a while. Try putting cones out on a 60mph road, with lorries hurtling past you. The only protection I had was a crap flashing orange light on my van up the road and some high vis! Fucking terrifying.

Needless to say I quit that shit and got into buying yoghurt.

After spending the last two weeks constantly soaked, I’ve finally got around to sticking some mudguards on the commuter bike.

Allez man, proper commuter :ok_hand:t2:

The swooping top tube graphics mate quite well with the rear mud guard :ok_hand:

Took the car today & I’m fine with that.

Snow had frozen last night, many of my usual roads/paths were untreated & I would end up on the main roads along with the cockwombles who reckon they have plenty vision after clearing a postage stamp of ice off their windscreen.

Same here, son’s new Uni schedule means he’s in all day on a Tuesday so can see this being a regular occurrence if the weather is remotely dodgy.
Ps. -8 in Pershore (a few miles from Worcester) overnight.

I braved it as I take pretty busy roads. It was shit though!

I haven’t cycled into work for a couple of weeks for various reasons and meant to give the Brompton a once over last night but the sofa was warm and the shed was cold so:

I am suitably ashamed :grimacing:

Been all round Worcester city centre looking for a small stiff brush and some oil/chain lube to have a bit of a go at the chain before riding home.
It’s absolutely useless here now, the only shop selling anything remotely of that nature is Wilko and their shelves have been bare for months, restocking seems to be an alien concept to them. Not a single other shop with anything resembling DIY, motor spares etc. Poundland was always a good fallback for that sort of thing but it closed a couple of years ago as the building was falling down and has never reopened.
Is every town centre so crap these days, as it does seem to be just (dubious) barbers, vape shops, phone repairs and charity shops left?

And takeaways in Middlesbrough, and other associated obesity outlets.

M&S announced they were bailing earlier in the week.
