You should definitely review that ![]()
I was thinking that it’s very easy to leave work slightly dehydrated, air con can do that even if you’re good at drinking water regularly.
Anything over an hour and you need to carry a litre of water IMHO.
Thanks all. What’s the difference between the £20 jobs at Halfords/Decathlon and the £100+ things?
The reason I’ve dropped the laptop/backpack is to avoid rubbing so I don’t want to have the same issue with water.
I would think mainly branding. The bite valve is probably less refined than a camelback but I’m basing this on copycat designs from 10 years ago. If you have a Halfords or Decathlon close by, a quick look is what I would do.
Anything with straps will chafe if you wear a vest (i.e if the straps can touch your skin).
When I started using camelbacks seriously (for 4-5-6 hr runs in the hills) a lot of people told me they didn’t want to wear one because it made their back wet. That doesn’t bother me, my main concern was the ergonomics, a slim backpack is easier to run in and doesn’t bounce like a waist bag .
I’ve got a 5l Decathlon hydration sack, it’s great. I imagine the main difference with the Halfords offerings is that the Decathlon one is designed for running & sits more snuggly/comfortable. I’ve never got into using the hydration bladder I prefer to use a 500ml flask or 2 in the shoulder strap pockets.
When it dies or I seriously enter an ultra I may upgrade to a Salomon/Osprey.
£2.79 for 500ml of coke!
And I think I left my locker key at home ![]()
12 years of turning into my estate… This was a new one.
I stay right as turn off 25m up the road.
Glad I pull off like a sloth
Just shoving a giant Cornish pasty down my neck when Mrs J phones to say she’s made a doctor’s appointment for 3:30 so can I come back to take her.
Cue 20 minute uphill ride on the verge of puking the whole way

One of my staff wants to see my cycle route into work - I can export the whole activity to gpx from Garmin Connect, but is there a better way to share routes?
He wants to plug it into his Garmin to try cycling in himself.
I assume you don’t want to connect on Strava?
I normally just send the strava link when I’m sharing routes, you can see the route and download it from that.
Not really, plus Strava says route sharing is a premium feature when I tried
OK, didn’t realise that. Creating routes is the only premium feature I use so I guess it makes sense that sharing them would be premium too.
More long winded ways:
Recreate the route in another app such as ride with GPS
Send the .gpx file with a gpx viewer and let then create the route from that. There might well be a better solution but I only use it once or twice a year when I have a gpx file that won’t upload or if I want to edit a gpx file - e.g. to start in a different place
https://gpxviewer.1bestlink.net/
Go really old skool and give them a narrative and let them create the route from that
Using the Garmin Connect app you can save your commute as a course then share your course by pressing the 3 dots on the top right when looking at the course.
Didn’t realise it was October already!
Felt like @jeffb this morning. Cracked out the gilet, arm warmers and glove liners in August ffs.
It felt pretty chilly this morning, car said 11c.
Little chance of me doing a UK triathlon this season ![]()
Was thinking of riding to work tomorrow but it’ll be full winter kit ![]()
Even I put a gilet on yesterday at the start of my ride. ![]()
You could tell that holiday season is almost over on the commute this morning.
There was significantly more people on bikes today than there has been for the last few weeks and traffic was much worse too. I’m sure it’ll only get worse next week when the schools go back ![]()
Some school’s are already back, but morning traffic is getting worse now, and chillier. Autumn is in the air. Almost time to get the winter bike equipment out.
got beaten off a 3 legged cat today on my commute in.
had a tailwind too. Going 32kmh down the cycle path, there was a ginger stray lying in the way. As I got near I shouted and startled him, rather than diving into the bushes he flew off away down the track in front of me for about 400m, going much faster than me, and made a bid for freedom.
Had an unusual bobbing gait…that’s when I noticed he only had one hind leg ![]()
First commute on the bike for ages (school holidays). About 1 km in, on the way home, sudden total flat. Looked like the rim tape had cut the base of the valve stem. Re-centred the tape and swapped the tube - no biggy - look at it properly later. New tube did exactly the same thing after another 2 km. Could have walked it in but missus was already home so taxi of shame. Lots of ways it could have been worse but still a bit of an arse.
