I’ve been using this bike for the last couple of years. Haven’t cleaned it in the time and the front mech has never worked. I spent a couple of hours yesterday, cleaning it and freeing up the mech, new brake blocks, new chain and a good clean. Unfortunately I didn’t check the rear mech travel, now that I can shift the front into the small ring, so when I dropped it into the lowest gear on the one hill on my commute home, the rear mech committed Hari Kirk by throwing itself into the rear spokes. Also had to make to call of shame.
It was deffo the dirt that was stopping the front mech working, which when working, sent the rear mech into the spokes! . I’ve also realised that it sheared off the hanger and I have no idea whether they are available for this bike anymore.
The front mech shouldn’t make any difference to the side to side range of the rear mech. I suspect your chain was a bit too long (having never used to small ring) so the rear mech jammed, got ripped off, and in the process got thrown into the wheel.
If you can piece the bits of hanger together well enough there are places on eBay that have dozens you can flick through by shape if one for your bike isn’t specifically listed.

Trying to find a match for the hanger on my main (newish) bike was a pita (just wanted a spare for long trips). Has a frame passport but even that wasn’t much help. Took it to the LBS in the end and they tracked it down. Hangers seem to be even worse than BB standards.
That’s what’s weird. I suspect you might be right but I used the large chainring- large sprocket method to size the chain, which I’ve done successfully dozens of times.
That’s the way I’ve always done it (miss the derailleur and add 2 links), maybe a stiff link or something in the chain was enough to push it over the edge.
I think N-S or S-N is the ideal commute. I spend most of my comutes this time of year hoping that people have seen before they pull out of junctions as I cycle E-W.
There’s been more than one occasion where ive been glad I don’t sit at my desk in the same pants I cycle to work in!
Not sure about gravel but when I was commuting on the MK redways which were littered with puncture fodder and I used to get loads.
My mate woeked in a bike charity that looked after the Santander bikes and he recommended me tge Schwabble Marathons that they use. They roll like shit but punctures were a thing of the past.
