This doesn’t surprise me, you’re well known for your resilience to inclement weather

But fair play ![]()
EDIT: I don’t know if I’ve mentioned (I did on Strava) but basically, I was sick of the M6 drive. Just boring and was making me tired. Plus running round Cov was based on no traffic delays. Anyways…
There’s a direct train from mine to Cov at 0620, then a very easy 6-7km pootle to the office in jeans and t-shirt, trying to keep it Prince Andrew-like (no sweat)
Coventry has an amazing kerbed off bike lane, super smooth tarmac and was sorta hill free, which was good for my pannier weight, body weight and fixie weight ![]()
So, the train back home is either 1736, change at Crewe, station at 1949, walk home for 2005.
Or, direct from Cov to Macc, arrive at 1906, home for 1946, shower and unpack, ready by 2005 ![]()
Plus that train is £23 cheaper (even though I don’t pay it, not paying train companies stupid fares is high on my agenda!)
Yesterday the train was 20mins later into Macc than planned, the wind was ferocious. But luckily, it was a tailwind and I made it home for 2005 ![]()
Just cruising along at 28kmh was lovely ![]()
Tired this morning though ![]()
Never look forward to first commute after clocks change.
Tonight was proper grim. Light forecasted rain clearly been pelting down all day. Flooded roads, twats in cars and eerie darkness did not make a great combo.
Roll on summer ![]()
What storm???
Four commutes today.
Bloody roasting on my way home ![]()
(Into a block headwind. On a fixie)
Bracing myself to ride in tomorrow, weather doesn’t actually look bad. It’s the cold and wet out there today that’s discouraging.
Fucking puncture on the way in. So much for Gators. New tube, attach cylinder…bang!
Took the bike on the train the rest of the way, wasn’t bad.
Yesterday morning was properly grim for the commute in. Not as many cyclists as usual, funnily enough, but still loads of folks on hire e-bikes to avoid.
I was expecting it to be windy when I rode home, but certainly by the time I left work at 7pm it was pretty calm.
It was lovely weather riding in this morning. I don’t usually go in to the office on a Friday and I was surprised by how quiet it was.
The properly dark evenings were a bit of a shock to the system this week. I wasn’t commuting at all last winter. I had a few pedestrians in dark clothing stepping out in front of me in Knightsbridge and Sloane Square. The pedestrian hazard is much worse on this commute than it was on my old commute to the City.

Where were their lights? I bet they weren’t wearing helmets, the scum!!!
Absolutely, but it’s amazing how hard it is to see someone in dark clothing when they have bright car lights in front of and behind them. The same applies to people riding bikes at night with no lights and dark clothing.
Modern street lights don’t really help
I rage against main beams in fully lit residential streets. Makes driving more dangerous I’m sure. Side lights are enough and don’t blind you to other things.
It’s the bloody crossing next to the Boss store where I always found people walking out and then again when you get onto the Kings road.
Almost miss commuting centrally. Almost!
I didn’t see a soul on my commute yesterday.
It wasn’t even raining ![]()
Easy folks ![]()
What types of bags do you use for commuting?
I’ve got a trusty pannier, which I’m perfectly happy with, but …
… it’s a PITA swapping the rack over if I ever want to use a geared bike ![]()
I’m thinking a backpack would be useful, but it’d have to be NON SWEATY variety and has to hold a laptop, towel, clothes + shoes.
So probably a 30l one.
Any ideas?
FYI: I don’t use Amazon. Wiggle, Evans etc are all fine with me ![]()

@gingerbongo has a Craft Cadence…
Although I do agree somewhat with @joex. Going from panniers to rucksack is a backwards step, stop being such a wannabe hipster get a commuter with gears
I think non sweaty AND a laptop is difficult to find. Certainly for the real non sweaty stuff.
I’ve got a deuter I used to use and it was amazing with it’s meshed arched back that was separated from the main bag storage. BUT put a laptop in, it was like a pendulum.
I’ve got an Amazon variant of that craft one, great for carrying alot, laptop doesn’t swing about. But in summer it’s not ideal on the sweat scale.
I use one of these, definitely not non-sweaty though
It’s winter, just ride easier, nothing sweaty about about a backpack if you don’t sweat much.
I’ve had that Pearson since before the word “hipster” was coined. It works. It doesn’t break.
When I’m in Manchester, the evening club run leaves at 6:40pm, so I can leave work later and hit that up. That’s the sole reason I’m looking for gears, as there are a couple of “dippers” where I’d lose contact with the group ![]()

Cheers @mw22 ![]()
@JibberJim - for the club run, I’d deffo be sweating! I was sweating the past few weeks in the wind and rain, too ![]()
