Commuting & Winter Riding Thread

Any use to you @BadAsh ?

Lezyne hecto 400 (Inc mount)

Lezyne macro duo (have a mount, may need different mount if helmet mounted)

Lezyne…small one. Sub 400 lumen I suspect (Inc mount).

Couple of eBay specials. Not the best flood/spot … but they are bright. Separate power pack. Have some but suspect they would need replacing (plus charger.. Not overly expensive).

No spare rears, tho I’ve only used Moon. And they never break.

Isn’t it a TT rule, nay tradition, that someone must recommend a Fenix TK22? (Or whatever TK number they’re up to now…)

Is that to go with your Planet X Stealth?

I’ve got theyze Leyzne lights @BadAsh and they’re good.

I used to do 10km on pitch black unlit roads, until I hit the suburbs, and that 400 front was fine.

I’ve upgraded to a 1200XL now, but still have two of the 400s for commuting now (as I am now in the suburbs and it’s lit - yes, that’s a pun)

Please don’t get lights suitable for 10km on pitch black roads to ride on shared use cycle paths in town with lighting (okay, the ones by the sewage works break pretty often) And point them down at the footpath so you’re not blinding all the poor folk out walking.

My main light now has a high and low beam - really appreciate having the ability (with its remote) to switch between the 2 functions.

Most of them have multiple modes now. Especially for this.

But yes, there’s a special place in Hell reserved for those bike riders and Tesla drivers

Isn’t there a proposed change to the law to make it an offence to cycle with a light that dazzles other road users?

These are the important new laws we need to fix broken Britain. An offence that mildly irritates dozens of people a day . Coppers with handheld lux meters perhaps?

This chat is making me want to get out for a night ride now

Can they include car drivers? Sick of being distracted/blinded by lights on fully lit streets.

There probably already is an offence for this for motor vehicles and they want to bring a law in for bikes to make them the same

:man_shrugging:

As with most laws related to cycling, they’re pretty pointless unless they actually enforce them and City of London is the only force that I see regularly stopping cyclists in London .

I think car lights front and rear on modern cars are so bright that even with lights a bike is difficult to see at night.

You’re almost looking for the silhouette against the car lights rather than the bike lights

Winters here

That wind certainly had some chill to it. First outing for the full bibs, thicker jacket, winter gloves and buff. Thought I would cook but was just about right.
Also back to dark mornings all the way in nearly :frowning:
Countdown to Dec 21st is very much on.

Definitely colder on the commute this week. The proper winter kit has come out.

The Lime bike riders are all going Alannis Morrisette-style - one hand in their pockets

My hands were frozen riding with a violin in one and holding the handlebars with the other to school today!

Was quite warm in my nice puffy jacket - still in shorts though. Just the hands that were a bit raw!

I haven’t cycled yet but noticed it walking the dog the last 2 mornings. The long trousers and wooly hat came out this morning but my hands were still frozen, especially after I let him have a run around dragging the lead behind him, then have to pick it up again soaking wet.

Hoping to cycle in on Friday when it says -2, feels like -4 :scream:

I bottled it and went in the van. The final straw was a burst water main on route, which had flooded the road then frozen over night.

This was the race course this morning, flooded with a layer of ice on the top.

My street is normally covered in frost than most on the route - so with that clear I braved it.
Everywhere that is normally ok, was in heavy frost and certain areas that normally suffer from the frost were clear - was very strange.
One of my slowest ever commutes - I just cant relax.
Full winter kit today, prob overdid it slightly as did end up a bit warm. But that balance with the first 5-10 minutes.

Rare commute for me today, headwind all the way  was a bit chilly to begin with but not bad for 7am in December!
