Critique my position/bike/thighs

Asked the wife to take a video. She needs a lesson in how to do bike fit vids.

That’s not too bad at all for a road bike with clip-ons. Decent hip angle, not too much movement, you’re not extremely low but your elbows look pretty close together so not too wide at the front and your head looks like it’s tucked enough for an aero lid to be OK.

Looks sustainable and one you can still lay power down from - is that the case?

Not bad for power, I think I need a lot of work on conditioning (bum and shoulders). It’s a new saddle which allows me to rotate forward better but a completely new experience with that thing so far up my jacksie.

My personal thoughts are that a little higher and little longer would be beneficial (if I could learn to sit in that rotated position). I’d have to try out a different stem because those bars aren’t adjustable. I’d also like to try out ski bends to see if that helps wrist comfort.

Shoulders should be OK, they tend to get used to the position over time.

Be careful about getting a longer stem, your elbows look nicely under you’re shoulders, so for longer stuff that’s going to help reduce the amount of support your shoulders and arm muscles need to provide. What distances are you doing?

I do mostly sprint/standard with an occasional HIM. My big race is the Centurion 100km tri in June, so plenty of time to build up to it.

Second one is in slow motion for some reason.
This position feels comfy on the road, which I guess is half the battle.

Nothing obvious to me, overall you could get lower but might need a tri bike to achieve that properly and it might not be confirtable fornyou.

You rock to the left on the first video, are the cleats in the same position? is one leg shorter than the other? There is no film from the back, but I suspect that there is quite a lot of movement in your pelvis, so maybe drop the saddle by 5mm

Your leg is too straight and you are lifting your heel, I would definitely drop the saddle

Interesting, and to be fair impressive observation. I’m lop sided. ( I think the physio was being polite ).
I can see exactly that in the head on film. Its not something that’s going to change any time soon as its a hip/pelvis alignment issue, but I will do a film from behind and post for further amusement.
This is with a new seat so its possible I’ve not allowed for that and adjusted failed to adjust the seat post.

Thanks. The bike is a Stealth, which even by Planet X’s admission isn’t Tri geometry, but I have a Frankenstein seat post that gets me an extra 30mm forwards, making a 78 degree angle. I will experiment with the front end height as the year goes on and I get used to the handling.

Yup! Ours has green cabling.

Sadly we don’t have any purple bags of compost, nor any portals to another dimension in our garden

Im not sure I agree on that one matt, the heel doesnt need to be flat for everyone and 145° on the extension is okay.

Rocking, is the subject of some debate but I dont see any aolud science to say you need to be perfectly still upper body, it seems more of an opinion based thing…plus hes on the grass so the turbo wont be solid - the whole bike is moving :slightly_smiling_face:

To fill the gap or not?
I’m looking at hydration and the between the arms systems score well for aero. But as my arms are raised, the bottle would block the hole highlighted above, which is currently allowing air through unaffected ( I’d imagine).
Big gaps or no gaps is the saying right?

Any thoughts on this?

I think it’s one of those where you’ll never know without testing both set-ups (or more with different hydration) in a wind tunnel or velodrome.
My gut feel is that, even though there looks a pretty clear tunnel through there, the air will be so messed up by stem, cables, legs, body all churning things up that it won’t make that much difference either way. I see you’re using drop bars & clip-ons so you’re not into marginal gains territory anyway.
I’d weigh the convenience of having fluid to hand without moving out of position, and gels with some systems, and decide if that’s what you want rather than any minimal aero (dis)advantage of the set-up itself.

Really into marginal gains. FWIW, I ride with my bottle between the bars, even on short TTs with an empty bottle, because I think it gives me an aero benefit, and because I am sure that the empty bottle cage is really un-aero. In races having the bottle where you can get a drink, and maintain aero position is a big benefit
