From drunk overweight golfer to triathlete in 3 days

7̶0̶.3̶ O̶m̶a̶n̶

Great report though! Sounds like a well executed race & love your enthusiasm

Congrats.

Sounds like very similar splits to my first 70.3. The heat makes it hard on the run when you’re already tired.

Race & report both executed like an absolute pro.

You were my first thought when I read that

Nice report @G8zzaj . Let the dust settle before your next race negs begin. More than one marriage has ended over Ironman.

Congrats. Welcome to the gang! Full IM in the not too distant future I’m sure!

Nice work @G8zzaj. Sounds like a really nicely paced first Long Distance race. You know when someone has put the training in and paced correctly as they are immediately thinking about their next race.

Try entering a race somewhere a little more exotic, and maybe your wife would be more keen

Thanks for the congrats everyone!!!

@Matthew_Spooner The location isn’t an issue, 2nd baby coming start of May and me wanting to disappear for 4 days end of June is the issue

@AndyG I have been eyeing up next year, very rough plan of doing the London marathon in April and then using that fitness to build on for the full in the summer! But very very early days on that!

Jeez - you are a braver man than me for even suggesting it

Maybe staying at home and doing local events and base building for the second half of the year may be a better idea. How old is your first kid?

You sound exactly like my wife! Now that I have been back from the race a few days and the adrenaline has subsided, common sense has prevailed and I won’t be travelling :frowning: @Matthew_Spooner first son is 3 so would be pretty poor form to jet off and leave her with a toddler and a newborn.

Plan is to do as many races before the end of the season in April which constitutes:

Sprint this weekend at the F1 track in Abu Dhabi
Olympic in Abu Dhabi on the 9th March
Sprint 17th March

Hopefully going to try a trail run at some point in April.

Then it’s in doors to train all summer ready for the season to start in Oct.

Am going to do some hyrox training for an event in Sept as well just to freshen things up as hours on the treadmill and in door training sounds soul destroying.

Sounds like a plan!

Get across to the other threads too. Loads of useful info on training and racing etc. A few of the guys are getting into their hyrox as well.

Good advice from GB but suggest avoid the sharks thread, it might temper your enthusiam

Hey everyone,

Quick update in case you were wondering where I’ve disappeared to.

Unfortunately I’ve been plagued with injuries since the 70.3 and has really derailed my training somewhat.

I have impingement and bursitis in my left shoulder which has ruled out swimming (shame as I “love” swimming ) Having a cortisone injection tomorrow.

Right foot - thought it would heal on it’s own but turns out I have Plantar Fasciitis, had treatment last 2 weeks and been doing rehab but tried to run yesterday and abck to square one so looks like a long recovery.

On the plus side, I can ride the bike and have thrown myself into that and been enjoying seeing the power increases, jumped into a Zwift race last week and will do one of those a week alongside some training to get my FTP up over the summer whilst the injuries heal.

Frustrating to have built to a nice level of fitness at 70.3 and to see it drifting away but it is what it is and I’m no stranger to injuries from rugby so will just plod on. I have plenty of time until the T100 in November.

PF is a right bugger to cure and usually takes more time than people have patience. Good luck!

Don’t let it knock you back, most of us have been there at some point early on.

I really recommend alternating trainers that you wear, shoes with different padding and different drop will reduce the risk of injury. When you feel that something isn’t quite right, stop/reduce training - don’t “man up” and try to train through the pain

I’m a believer in rotating running shoes too & usually have 4 or 5 pairs on the go :+1:

My theory is that subtly different loads will be passed to your musculoskeletal system, rather than one spot getting hammered over & over. No idea if science or woo though
