My 735 is 2 years old, used for swimming twice a week (OW & pool), never missed a beat. (The lack of barometer was a selling point for me, after issues with my 910xt)
Strap is starting to show first signs of wear so think that will go soon but I think that’s perfectly acceptable.
It does seem swimming, and specifically pool swimming (chlorine), can cause issues. Maybe Garmin don’t expect triathletes to swim
They say you shouldn’t press the buttons under water, and rinse off after your swim. But apart from wear it in the shower afterwards, does anyone?
I always forget to rinse it under a tap tbh. But it’s currently only getting 30 min swimming a week atm.
As for not pushing buttons underwater…yeah righto
I’m in much the same boat.
Had the 935 for 2.5 years, few bits and pieces already gone wrong…
… watching on with interest!
I would upgrade, but I’m strapped for cash.
I’m hoping for a 945 black Friday offer.
I had a Polar 400 for 8years and it finally died. the for 10yrs I just raced with an IM Timex and no bike computer (the horror) and still managed to win a few bike races
I’ve had my Garmin 935 for 2.5yrs and it’s still absolutely fine. (Av lap time is a bit sketchy but always has been).
I’ve just noticed that little heat map thing for ‘faster/slower’ on my run, I think that’s new?
Yeah, Garmin added it to the Garmin Connect maps a few weeks back. You can select pace/speed, HR and power I think. The latter only relevant to the bike.
I went back to basics to work out why my Garmin was crashing. Based on @buzz comment, I realised that it crashed when I pressed the button at the end or the start of a lap. I think that the seal on the lap button is no longer good, and when button is pressed, a little water gets in a creates a short circuit, which crashes the watch.
In order to fix this, I smeared vasseline around the buttons before my swim yesterday, and it worked, not a single crash. Suspect that this is not a very long term fix, but worth considering if your watch is crashing when swimming
Vasseline may not be seal friendly. Consider some water based, KY or similar from the bottom drawer
I try not to swim where there are seals, whilst they look cute and everything I’m scared they’ll bite.
Won’t water based wash off in the pool?
That’s a very good point
I’ve swum with seals. Big bloody things. In New Zealand. Whilst I was a bit afraid of them, I was absolutely terrified about bumping into what might feed on them.
Are we playing forum Chinese whispers?
Leopard seals; always check the pool for those before you jump in.
Mrs GB alway had a fear of seals! When we used to surf out in the Gower it was rare that you wouldn’t see one. Pretty freaky when they silently pop up just metres away from you. No neck, just this giant slab of muscle and blubber with big brown eyes.
I loved them. They are seriously fast though. The speed they could move from one side of the beach to the other when we used to swim ‘with them’ back at home in Pembs/Ceredigion.
Yes I thought they were awesome, leopards seals and sea lions I think. Two species anyway, smaller and absolutely massive. Friendly as anything but those teeth are obviously to be given due respect.
I’d never swim in the vicinity of a leopard seal if I had a choice. This happened to one of my RHUL alumni: Seal drags Antarctic scientist to her death. Tragic. Makes me shiver to think about it.
Anyone else’s Garmin 945 (and presumably others) started offering them training suggestions when they switch it on and select an exercise type. When I select running it often says do something like 5K @5:10/K pace. And last night suggested doing 3 minute reps @4:00/K pace.
Yeah, it’s a new feature that came with the release of the 745, along with the new track running mode. Both have now been ported to the 945. You can turn it off. I was quite surprised on Tuesday when I went to do my 50min easy run per my coach, to find Garmin’s suggested workout was 49mins easy!
Today’s is a sprint session recommendation Two blocks of 5x10s sprints mixed into a 56min run.
On my actual plan are tempo intervals of 15, 12 & 10 mins. I tend to do a lot more tempo stuff and very few “sprints”. The Garmin continually tells me I’m undertrained in an anaerobic sense.
