Gravel Riding Chit Chat

You’ll definitely beat one person I know :face_with_hand_over_mouth: but he’s a couple of AG above you.

Easy day one, yeah?

@awildt how is Mr’s training going, has he gone over to Brenig to get a loop in?

They have only recently started allowing OW swims there if you preferred doing that while he goes off cycling & the cafe is pretty good.

He’s cycling a bit more. Not sure that constitutes training. His colleagues are trying to do it but are currently on the waiting list. They’ll all be waaaayyyyy faster than him.

He hasn’t been to ride the route but the mechanic in his shop has and told him all about it.

Good to know there’s a good cafe. He didn’t get parking with the entry (probably sold out) so I’m going to have to look at parking and logistics for the day.

So who’s on the start list for Sunday?

Mr is taking the bike and nutrition prep very seriously. He’s been seriously let down by Matt holmes who has failed to return his Trek-sponsored bikes now that he’s on Factor. That’s annoyed Mr quite a lot because they did so much for Matt and then when they asked him to do one thing for them, he didn’t. So he’s compromised on the bike he’s using.

However, this does not make up for his lack of training, so I suspect I’ll have a long day of spectating ahead of me.

Just go to Velo-Edge on Sunday morning and take it off him :joy::see_no_evil:

I’m not on the start list :sob:

Long day indeed, do they really need 2 hours to register 500 people, then another hour until the start at 11am? I’m gonna miss my lunch!

Bit annoying that it’s been nice all week and now looks like the weather is going to crap out over the weekend

The logistics confuse me a bit but I guess we just have to go prepared for everything. Mr entered quite late on so we don’t have parking booked which will add to the fun for my day.

:crossed_fingers:t3: that rain stays away a bit. It was looking like a really nice day.

You could try parking at Llyn Alwen, it would be a slight uphill cycle there, but crucially for Mr, a downhill return.

I’ve also cycled up there when the GB Rally Wales had been on & cars/vans/motorhomes have just been parked on the verge with no shits given.

Yeah that’s the recommended alternate parking. Just debating whether I take my bike too and get around on that or just walk. I think I might walk - save the hassle!!!

Colleague got an email today so they’ve got a place. Not sure if you’ve got the same?

Nope :sob:

But I’ve ten plug sockets to tidy up this weekend.
So :woman_shrugging:t2:

How did you get on @r0bh ?

Mr bailed after lap 1. I knew he was going to suffer and he did. But it’s the kick he needed. That men’s 50-54 category is horrendously competitive. Biggest start group on the line and most number of full route finishers. Only 2 years and he’ll go up an age category. I think that 2 years will be good to get him focussing on proper training and losing some weight.

I enjoyed my day out. Weather was kind until the last hour we were there. The start/finish was in the windiest and coldest spot in the whole area - we had to wait for Mr’s colleague to finish as we had his warm clothes.

One for the over 50’s thread but it’s a massively stacked age group across sports and regularly beats most others.

A lad from our club ran 1:16 yesterday in that group and still didn’t win!

The drop off beyond that age group is astonishingly quick though. 55-59 was a third of the size and then each AG after that was no more than 10 guys.

Yeah, I’ve noticed that as I’ve been watching M55 as I’m in it next year.

Wondering if I’ll drag this cohort with me or if they decide the aches, pains and training aren’t worth it anymore :man_shrugging:t2:

The pointy end is still very good though as proven by the likes of chickenboy.

Same can be said of IMW yesterday. It does seem 50+ is the new 40+, and a wonder if it’s just a peak agegroup and will continue to be as they age up through the categories.

Yeah, people like buzz, spoons and quite a few others!

I was towards the back of 45-49 and most of 50-54 steamed past before I’d even got to the top of the lake on Lap 1!

First lap was 2:26 but I went too hard and from the start of lap 2 my hamstrings were threatening to cramp up on every climb. Suffered round it though to finish in 5:13, last hour was very wet indeed! Winner in my AG was 3:51 :open_mouth: there were some very fast riders there

Course was a lot trickier than when I did a recce as it was much wetter, even before the rain came down. Saw a few people crash in front of me.

I think we’re the AG that is kind of ‘peak triathlon’ many of us got into it in the fairly early days, or found the sport at it’s peak or on the way towards it. Tbh I got bored after 12 long seasons. Younger generations see things as boxes to tick rather than a lifestyle these days.

Shouldn’t you lot be talking Gravel anyway?
