My mate qualified at Bolton with a 14 hour finish time.
He trains about 6-8 hours per week.
He’s doing my kitchen for me.
With the money I had saved to go to Kona.
I am literally paying someone else to go to Kona, FFS

But getting a really nice kitchen and lots of brownee points that you can cash in for more training in the future
Yeah, but just think ahead 5 years. He’ll only have the fading memory of a trip of a lifetime, something to tell the grandchildren, photos of snorkelling with the turtles, tales of the underpants run and coffee at Lava Java with Jan and Lionel.
Whereas you’ll have… a 5 year old kitchen
I think you need to complete the event to stand a chance to KQ; so I doubt he feels hard done by
Yeah, rowing to tri was a bit of a soft landing for me too. With double outings at the weekend I was out of the house from 7:00 to 13:00 every Saturday and every Sunday from September through to Henley in July. If we were racing that would be the whole day gone and some weekends we’d be racing both days.
I did have a rowing machine at home, so I did sessions on that before work 2 days per week and weights at the gym 2 days per week. If we were doing evening sessions on the water, I wouldn’t be home before 9pm by the time I factored in travel and faffing time.
It’s no surprise that most people give up rowing when they have kids.
We won’t even be here in 5 years time
I know the Omicron news is worrying, but thats very fatalistic.
As long as the world doesn’t end until after October 10 2022 I’ll be happy
If we survive to the Sigma (sports) Variant, we all qualify de facto
It’s the Omega variant we should worry about
Yeah, game over then
Isn’t that the one where Charlton Heston is the only survivor of the pandemic
Well he is until he visits a shop and the mannequins aren’t quite right.
It is still a pretty extreme way to win your age group
Logan’s Run might be more extreme/effective
By the time Wales starts up again they should just re brand it as OldMan as half the age groupers will have shifted a category - me included
Nice exchange.
I’m trying to remind my fiance that when we swam 18hrs a week, we also had a 45 minute drive each way to the pool. Add the faff time of swimming compared to bike/run, and suddenly my 10-12hrs a week tri training is minimal.
She still thinks it’s too much though because she now does ~3-5hrs.
The ‘egg timer’ has probably started for you anyway
In the last crew that I rowed in at Henley, Mrs W was in the coxes seat (so was there for all of the water sessions) and 4 of the other 7 guys in the crew were going out with (and ultimately married) members of the women’s squad, so their partners were training similar hours. Rowing clubs are great places to meet life partners
As people got married and started to have kids they gave up rowing, but most people stop in their 30s anyway because they can’t compete with the younger guys and there’s a bit of a vacuum between open racing and veteran categories with any depth of field. Some of them stop training completely and get fat and others switch into less time rigid activities like cycling and triathlon.
