Ideas for the future of Ironman

Hopefully they’ll move the women’s race to Nice :white_check_mark:

Then the men and women can take the stage together on a proper course

Go and suggest that on Slow Twitch

Kona is dead :headstone:

Women don’t want to race there.
They can’t give away slots.

A woman’s only race in Nice? :joy::rofl::joy:
It’s not going to work. Nobody will enter.

Nice will be abandoned after this year.

They’ll probably run a male 70.3 to prop it up

And despite the same start time the water will be cold enough for ladies to wear a wetsuit but not men :man_shrugging:t2::joy:

(Appreciate that sounds horribly sexiest but is actually a reference to Nice 2019)

I hadn’t really appreciated just how low the numbers were becoming…

i was tracking an athlete yesterday and she was 4th in Cat…in 15:30…and 400th to finish…

Is the sport really in terminal decline?

Nearly 2000 finishers in Copenhagen yesterday so some races are doing well, they just have to appeal I guess.

The tough courses aren’t going to always appeal to first timers or those looking for a fast time so without lots of people entering the sport then numbers end up down.

Possibly didn’t help having Kalmar the day before? Also Vichy and Cork the same weekend was certainly poor planning.

Although I suspect most people would only target one regardless of date, mostly just a problem for a European clone of TC

Are we saying Ironman is a sport now?

Unless we switch to Mattel Universe, where it’s called Barbie, yes.

So is the question: is Ironman dying or is triathlon dying? They are different things but the answer could be the same.

Dying is a bit extreme…but i certainly sense the decline…

No idea the validity, first

Good question FP!

Completely subjective, but feels like running isn’t in the same position (happy to be corrected mind).

Triathlon is an expensive sport, mind. If a persons financial situation is under scrutiny, it’s really easy for the person to knock it on the head and simply move into running or a cheaper sport.

Certainly running remains more readily accessible…as does o/w swimming relative to where it was a few years ago…

BTF are now contributing to this by launching their SBR plan of course…

Or running?
