AKA the @Toyota_Crown school of tapering ![]()

I guess the risk is that with private equity, breaking up a selling parts is a normal mode of operation for a declining business.
The business though has been saddled with massive debt for a while hasn’t it? Not sure where PE goes from here.
Doesn’t need to go anywhere, they’ve got the money, they loaded it up with cheap debt in the cheap debt era, they took the money out, now it’ll die, the PE money is happy. It can die, or maybe it’ll be resurrected when someone buys the trademarks for not much.
OK so I might have done ParkRun last Sat in Lincoln, then MidnightMan IM in Dartford later that evening, but I drove there in said Toyota Crown OK! ![]()

Some big numbers for the 70.3 WC this weekend, clearly there’s a lot interest around the world. Surprised how many are coming from America.
Are they coming from the USA or are they based in Europe? It’s also conveniently “labor day weekend” next weekend so the minimal leave allowances can be used around the long weekends.
70.3 is still one of the most accessible distances - a challenge but not all consuming. I think that format will continue. It’s the 140.6 that will need a complete shift.
They had c6500 competing in St George last year, think it was something like 4400 men.
I did consider how many would be based in Europe, I suspect a few but there’s still a lot of qualifying races in America.
Also, given the exchange rates and their higher wages these days it’s probably not as bad as when we went to StG last year.
I actually think Nice will have at least 3K athletes, and filling the WC is probably a lot easier than filling the qualifying IM’s, they’re were the problem is for them.
the number of women at key races has been far lower than i could ever have imagined…
Yes, despite their women for tri the places per race based on old numbers and slot allocation meant they were always going to be a lot more males.
Women aren’t also helped by the guarantee of 1 slot per age group, from 60 upwards you could quite easily get a 1:1 ratio for those groups.
The split WC might improve this
Not sure of the best thread but more sad news from Finland, and I doubt lake conditions contributed to this.
On a day meant to celebrate the spirit and achievements of our IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship athletes, we are devastated to share the passing of one of our race competitors. The athlete was extracted from the water approximately halfway into the swim, received immediate medical assistance by water safety first responders, and continued treatment on shore by emergency personnel, including two event doctors. Despite all medical efforts, the athlete passed away.
sheesh - not good
i have athletes out there…thankfully all now reported in…but that is grim news…
Looks like ironman are trying to retain their pro field from all moving to PTO.
18 eligible races across 70.3 and IM with Individuals top 5 results combined for points, with $5-200K for the top 50 each gender at the end of the year.
Ah, I I just posted this elsewhere.
Messick talks about the PTO only being good for the top 40, yet he wants to help the whole 1000 pro field. Yet the IM scheme only pays out to the top 50. And the daily prize purses for the individual races remain mostly unchanged. So not sure how that works.
Still, a good opportunity for more prize money for the pros. ![]()
They didn’t want to help until PTO came along, but hopefully better for the pro’s.
Presume they think online coverage might keep the sport in the spotlight.
18 races paying 50 deep, that’s nearly 1000 pay-outs. Just got to make sure nobody wins more than once…
It can only be a good thing for the pros, more opportunity for a payout. But the main problem with triathlon for the fan is too many races mean the top athletes can pick and choose and we don’t get enough top class fields. At least everyone turns up to Kona, the rest of the year, there is always half the field missing.
Even at ITU/WTCS level, there are so many races that they can pick and choose and only come together at the grand final. Even then, it’s a poor 2nd to the Olympics, so one stacked field every 4 years!
