Im seeing so much misinformation about her husband and coach. If you look her up on their website shes got an “illustrious” career, came 22nd in olympic qualifier

There’s a lot of online chat - Oceania qualifiers not that good. Husband on the selection panel, break community furious at it all, accusations of cultural appropriation, race, and her PHD thesis or whatever getting pulled apart.

‘What a disaster, as a culture we fight so hard to gain respect with the insane difficulty of our dance only to be undermined by this fiasco. She had time to get in shape she could have cross trained like the rest of us do. Look at the physical prowess of everyone else.‘

F’ked if I know about it all though. Like you said, probably lots of new material for her next thesis!

Perhaps the IOC should consider this instead of breakdancing in '28… :joy:

I’ve posted that clip a couple of times before, the mind boggles. I do believe she is some kind of ‘name’ in equine circles. If we see her beating a horse, then expect to see her at LA!

There were some very good breakers at the Olympics, she wasn’t one of them. But we don’t mind when a relatively poor runner or swimmer gets a go at the Olympics. It was entertainment, of sorts.

Back when I was rowing, there was a guy from a neighbouring club who decided that he was going to try to qualify for the Athens Olympics for Nigeria.

For most boat classes the number of places at the Olympics is very limited and qualification is based on the previous year’s world championships with a last chance at the pre-Olympic qualification regatta for anyone who isn’t already in.

For single sculls it’s different. There’s 36 boats in the Olympics, all from different countries. The top 12 boats qualify the same way as the other boats, but the remaining places are allocated through the continental qualifiers and are not available to the big rowing nations.

The single scullers at the Olympics race more than any other boat class and it finishes up with an A final for the medals right the way down to an F final for 31st to 36th place.

The single scull is the most technical boat to row and the difference between the top scullers and even a good club sculler is huge. I was a decent sculler in my day, but I reckon I would be lucky to stay within 500m of the medalists over a 2000m course.

This guy had been rowing for a while in bigger boats, but he was very much a novice sculler and I would have beaten him out of sight in a race.

He went to the African continental qualifiers and despite being quite a poor sculler ended up in the final. He was in a position that would have got him a place at the Olympics and was within 250m of the finish line when he clipped a buoy and capsized and watched the rest of the field row past him while he waited for the safety boat to pull him out of the water :flushed:

I used to train with someone who competed in one of the mens downhill skiing events for Swaziland (Eswatini as it’s now called). He was Scottish, can’t remember how he was eligible but certainly spend some of his youth out there.

He was a decent skiier, actually moved to the USA to work as a ski instructor.

In Para there is a continental cup series that is one of the higest scoring races in the season but you can only score in your continent. Think there was only one or two taking all the points in my class at the African continental cup.

it’s like some of the early bickering with the BTA and ITU…but played out globally…

Bit harsh dragging Anna Meares into it - she was the team manager, wasn’t she? I doubt if she had input into the breaking selection process :man_shrugging:

yep, perhaps a bit harsh…no idea how big the Aussie team was, nor what she had to do…

Edit: Ah she was the chef de mission…
