No. But I always keep a look out for him and his dogs when I’m out and about as he lives locally.

It was the speed of the D+ app on our tv that made me hesitate to watch there in the second week. Once it’s mostly athletics I’m ok with the bbc mash-up. But I did use the filler time to go to the loo or get snacks.

She was there fair and square. The reaction has reminded me of how twenty years ago delusional X Factor competitors were treated by the program and then by the press. I hope she gets a 5-ring tattoo and dines out on her story for a decade.

In October, 2023, the inaugural WDSF Oceania Breaking Championships were held at Sydney Town Hall. Thirty-seven B-Boys and 15 B-Girls from the Pacific region competed for the incredible prize of a chance to be an Olympian. The event was broadcast around the world live on the Olympic Channel.

Sixteen-year-old Jeff “J-Attack” Dunne won the B-Boys’ competition, while Raygun took gold in the B-Girls’ category.

I mean, she’s not great but if that’s the best Australia have then so be it. What has confused me is why if there’s minimum set of moves to perform, did she not do any of them and then get 0 points?

well, I’ll let you crack on with that…I’ll settle for his commentary…

Please keep us posted of any ‘chance’ encounters…

I don’t think there is scoring in Breaking, just a judges vote for who wins the battle. So if all judges vote for the other performer, she will get 0.

The scoring was one thing that made it hard for me to get into. With the skateboarding and BMX, the commentator is describing all the different moves they are doing, you get a sense of one doing more difficult tricks that another. The Breaking I saw was just, watch, see which one you like, see if the judges agree. No description of the moves or the difficulty.

but that programme is mostly about taking advantage of the delusional and the confused…oh how we laughed… and (some) programme producers are now being sued for their part in the deception played…

as a uni professor, one assumes they had full control of what they were letting them selves in for…and every opportunity to prepare or withdraw…

Seems odd. I’d assumed it was more similar to all of the other sports like skateboarding where as you say, the scores for completed tricks accumulates.

It probably went something like ‘oh is she the sheila that brought 2 slabs of beer to that barbie? She seems a good sort’

Or something equally as demanding

Not sure if the direct link will bypass the firewall but should be able to do so on many sites.

It’s an interesting discussion point. I always feel we value track more than field, and this supports it. Personal experience also backs it up. Our club is over the moon we’ve had female representation in the last two Olympics at the marathon, but as great as Steph and Rose are, their times were never going to get near competing. So when you read of some of these field athletes experiences, it does seem pretty unfair

She’s an academic also. She seems to already have some sort of media profile over there … she set herself up for a fall I think in because she was on the telly beforehand talking about how much she’d practiced some new moves. I dunno. She’s an Olympian. Who can say that?!

The results have lots of scoring:

RAYGUN and the disqualified Afghan who only did the one round were the only girls to not score a single point. The Morrocan only got 2

by default…I think it undermines the olympic ethos…but then, the IOC etc already do that…

It’s an interesting point to which I add H’s point about the challenging standards of the eagle’s progression.

I was very lucky to go to a good school, both for academics and sport (or unlucky depending on your perspective).

One of my classmates was a good skier (longer story) and went on the race for GB. He then became a coach and eventually made it as Chair of the alpine, speed and telemark committee. His first ‘act’ was to challenge the GB Olympic selectors on why GB’s qualification standards were tougher than Austria’s standards, the result of which being that we sent less skiers to the Winter Olympics. He was dismissed within days.

Conspiracy Time!

RayGun and her husband (her “coach”) were on the selection committee, and he started the organisation behind it.
