Ironman Ireland Cork 2020-23

interesting. fair play if the IM Wales organisers (not directly IM in year 1) had made up those T 0.5 hooked boards as a PlanB well in advance, just in case. anyway, it all worked out fine!

That video doesn’t make it seem so bad. But we all know what it looks like from the shore and what it’s actually like are two different things

Interesting that they only had one turn boy, so a 180? And not swim in a rectangle - east to see where folks could have gone wrong and starting swimming into each other

Yes, they could have at least had a tight rectangle like Kona :man_shrugging:

Hmm. I feel wagons are being circled.

They should really all be coming together imo. Not good for the families either.

People are talking about this who never talk tri.
A guy at the gym today… quite random really?!
We all know it happens but it seems a perfect storm of media hype.

If there’s a ripple at Tenby you ll all be doing a 500 quid duathlon

You mean something like: “Even though our technical officials felt that they could not sanction the event*, we fully support the decision to proceed”

*One assumes on safety grounds…

If they over rule the TO there would be bigger problems to follow…it was bad enough in madrid…

A lot of Karen’s on the IM forums on FB

This one’s a belter:

‘It’s absolutely disgusting, and down right appalling, that the swim was allowed to happen, being a weak swimmer myself, if I were doing cork I would have entered the water, for fear of showing weakness in front of friends, and god only knows what would have happened, we should be protected from ourselves…’

If you look closely you’ll spot me - I’m one of those actually NOT running up the beach but doing the whole swim. Once past those first few breakers the swim was fine although a very large swell on the return legs

a TO speaks

TOs are at events to oversee safety issues and if we are not happy with things we request changes - often on the day. But if a Race Organiser decides to continue against the wishes of the TOs then they have the right to do so but then all permits granted become null & void - which could include the loss of insurance cover.

At very large events like WT/ET champs, decisions to change matters are made between the TOs/organisers and other invested bodies (e.g. city authorities) so it’s a joint decision that results. Safety will always be of prime importance hence you saw Madrid and Paris duathlons due to water quality concerns.

The national hurricane center is tracking 5 tropical storms heading for the Caribbean. Quite often the remains of these get picked up by the Jetstream and lobbed our way. Timing is about perfect for one of them to arrive in Tenby :slightly_smiling_face:
