Ironman Lanzarote 2021

Agree it’s a jigsaw to put all the bits together. Had the race been Sat 29th May then I would probably have flown out solo about Mon 24th. Couple of days to play bike and get route dialled in then a rest before the race. Family fly out on Sat 29th, hopefully catch the end of the race, then all have a chilled holiday for a week then home. Alas not to be in 2021. 2020 would actually have worked but I only realise that now, and of course the race was cancelled anyway.

One day!

We went as a family. I didnt do the event for those who remember but I remember thinking at the time if I was doing it, the holiday would have been a lot less relaxing for all of us.

I still want to do it one day, and the kids are desperate to go back

You should definitely go back.

Spent a long weekend there a few years ago now. But really enjoyed it

Mrs FP is dead keen for a week at CLS. (they used to do their own HIM, not sure if they still do)

My mate reckons it looks like a prison camp (he hates swimming). I think going there for a HIM, or even a trail event would be a better racecation than IM.

I remember checking flights for IM Lanza and the options were pretty hard if you didn’t live near Gatwick or Heathrow but that was a while ago and Little One was younger.

I reckon 7 full days there would be the minimum for us to make it work but I haven’t looked at it seriously for a couple of years.

I’ve been to TriSports Lanzarote a few years for camps, they nickname CLS the prison.

From my experience of Wales and Lanza The finish times were similar until last years Lanza with the new bike course it is slower. Lanza easier to prep for it is either hot or hot and windy and at the end of May I feel is a better tine of year than September. Wales weather can be anything big sea swell, cold windy wet or hot you just don’t know and although you would think training for a later season race would be better I struggle to stay consistent over the summer.
Both superb races crowds and support marvellous
The difference for me is riding over the Mirador, you see a picture of a cyclist at Lanza IM they are probably riding up there, low stone wall behind them and the view out to sea is beautiful and it is followed by a long fast descent and dual carriageway stretch! I really do hope that I will race both again.
Roth is next for me 2021

1 x Lanza 11:54
5 x Wales 11:18 - 11:53

Lanza should have been c11:45, 8/9 minute bike mechanical.

Two best IM races I have done, love to do another Lanza.

When I’ve done Lanza, I have had a good prep travelling on the Tuesday, staying in PdC, doing one lap of the swim course Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, travelling up to CLS to register on the Wednesday or Thursday and flying back home on the Monday or Tuesday.

That’s interesting, I’d always have thought it would be quicker than Wales…

Lanza is definitely my favourite race but boy it hates me!

For me it’s unrequited. Been to Lanza many times, ridden and run the course. But never been able to get there in May.

What is the run out behind the airport like on race day? When I have run there on some random day it has been hot, dusty, and with a strong smell of kerosene

that’s pretty much it really, only go past there out and back once fortunately!

All of them & very little shade ,at least its only 1 big out and back & 2 shorter laps now

i know its still the same heat ,wind & location BUT the changed bike route & non mass swim start has taken the edge off it for me .

Swim start didn’t feel any different to me, slotted in and went for it, bit of a scuffle around the buoys on lap 1, stuck to the rope on lap 2.

Bike is different but it’s same tarmac, same wind, in fact the out and backs are grim, but that’s the deal. Depends what you want

They haven’t changed the swim yet, it was going to be the new course and waves this year

How are they going to be viable next year with socially distant flights running at what, 1/3rd capacity?

Prices triple? Luggage capacity halves to save fuel…?

the swim start has not changed yet should have been age group starts this year :see_no_evil:

Ah I see swim start not changed yet, that’s why it didn’t seem any different!

I notice Lanza hasn’t yet opened for 2021 - I’m wondering if it’s because they’re still working out who will be a defaulted entry following the cancellation of this years’ event, or whether they are pausing whilst they sort out a viable, socially distanced and safe way to run the event.

I’d love to enter as soon as registration opens, but right now for me there are too many variables, and I cannot see how any race will realistically be possible until a vaccine has been found and rolled out.

I don’t know about everyone else, but my confidence levels of Ironman events returning in 2021 are diminishing - either they’ll be prohibited from happening, or they’ll open for registration and won’t get the registrations required due to nervousness amongst competitors.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on this?

(Not sure if this fits into Lanza thread, or C19 thread - it’s Lanza specific because I’m expecting registrations to open soon and are interested in what people are thinking, but happy for it to be moved).
