Lanzarote is now clear of COVID-19 I saw the other day. There maybe a possibility that with some sort of testing regime it could go ahead but its all still a complete unknown.
It usually opens for entries about now, so they probably are waiting for further information.
Its a disgustingly nasty race, with very little good that can be said about the conditions… Its a thoroughly unpleasant experience from start to finish… and that’s why its utterly EPIC and everyone absolutely loves it!
So I think it very much depends on the host country and their dependence on tourism…which is how Ironman makes money. If I can be a pure cynic for a while, IM Lanza exists to attract tourists, Lanzarote will likely be desperate to get tourists in after this years debacle, so I fully expect next year to run.
As for medical safety, the airlines and hospitality industries will deploy a bunch of theatrical measures that have virtually no impact on the spread of the disease but make a big show of “doing something” to reassure people without impacting revenue. (See post 9/11 measures for reference)
As a counter view, the islanders aren’t very much in love with the event… there was (apparently), a lot of complaining about the road closures this year, and its impact on the wider tourist industry… so don’t be surprised if they choose to put their efforts in elsewhere, and see IM as an unnecessary distraction.
I think the strict interpretation of the law that led to the route change in 2018 (any roads used for the race had to be fully closed in both directions) make the race more of an inconvenience than it used to be. The first time I raced there in 2008 I think the roads over Mirador de Haria and Mirador del Rio were about the only fully closed roads. I remember being passed by tour buses while riding through Timanfaya and on the LZ1 we were riding on the hard shoulder with the road fully open.
Ah cool, I thought they were waiting until registration opened.
Id like to be in it next year but everythings such a mess. Do we know if they’re waiting until the postponed race happens to open registration? (Im hoping so)
Ive got brighton marathon shifted to april 2021 which would make it a rerun of 2019 for me, and little chance of a good performance at Lanza. Not sure I want to be in marathon at all now though.
Leave booked, flights booked. Just need to enter the race now when registration opens, and find somewhere to stay. Oh yes, and do some training. Feeling pretty stoked at the prospect- something to look forward to & keep me honest over the winter months.
