I didn’t book flights or accomodation yet, however, I have a flight that I need to use before the end April (defered from last year), so may take a Lanza trip over easter if travel is allowed
Get a move on before there is another volcanic eruption
I’ve been to La Santa numerous times in May and it’s usually been hot and windy (although it does tend to be cloudy on that side of the island in the morning).
The one time I went there in late June/early July I ended up buying a hoody because it cool and cloudy for the whole trip! Folks who I met while I was there said that the weather had been much better when they’d been out there in January that year.
The thing about the climate in Lanza is that it doesn’t vary massively throughout the year. I think the May calendar slot is more down to the fact that the weather then is better than most of Europe and it boosts visitors before the peak summer season rather than because the weather is too hot later in the year.
July is also the windiest month of the year in the Canaries, and as you said, can be brutally hot.
Just digesting what this change of dates means for me. Wife’s a teacher, her last day of term is 2nd July so not impossible I could go out ahead of her, do the race, and then she fly out and have another week there together. Not sure.
We have been 3 times in July - it seemed often overcast and not super-hot at La Santa, although pleasantly scorchio at Playa Blanca. Sea considerably cooler than the Med.
Just to be clear, everyone enters Lanza because they want a hot, windy race, right?
Yeah you don’t go for the lake tour and the opera
Yeah, but the one time I went in July (to windsurf) it was 40°, and that’s a bit on the sweaty side for IM
There is so much shade at Lanza as well
The place I go for training camps they stop camps and sports hiring after IM in May because its too hot and windy. Just a holiday let then.
So sounds fun. Actually slightly jealous I’m not doing it.
Yeah but the bike course is flat so it’s not too bad.
Dear athlete,
Our team has been hard at work preparing safe and enjoyable in-person events for our athletes in 2021, including the Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote triathlon.
Unfortunately, after evaluating the continued status of of the COVID-19 pandemic in the Canary Islands and Spain and the resulting restrictions in place, we regret to inform you that the Club La Santa IRONMAN Lanzarote cannot take place in May and has been rescheduled for July, the 3rd, 2021.
We acknowledge that this latest shift may not be the news you were hoping to receive but we believe the event will be better positioned in July and wanted to ensure you have the opportunity to plan for the rescheduled event date or choose from one of the additional options that may work better for you. Please know that we remain just as focused on creating an exceptional race experience as you are in preparing to compete. Our team will continue to work hard developing and refining operational plans in a manner consistent with local community objectives and within the guidelines and recommendations set by public health entities as it relates to COVID-19.
Your registration will be automatically moved to the new event date in July, but you can also choose from below additional options:
- Defer your entry to the 21st of May 2022 IRONMAN Lanzarote
- Defer your entry to the 20th of May 2023 IRONMAN Lanzarote
its pissed on my chips
trying to get my head round this
really want to do in 2021
we have booked flights and accom, we have booked time off work for end of may,
we re book flights, accom mess people around at work and then come july 3rd 2021 and it does not happen .
watching CEO of IM on YOUTUBE video got impression they did not see many races happening before june so why re arrange this so close
Really can’t see things changing sufficiently in 6 weeks from the May to July dates
That’s my concern too. July not ideal.
Currently I’m toying with deferring until 2023 when will be M50
Might still go out this May for a weeks training as have flights and accom booked anyway
If the flights aren’t cancelled we’ll still go out, definitely need the break and change of four walls, not too sure if I’d take the bike still but would take the wettie and running stuff
yeah also now looking more like we will be having a holiday/training trip end of May ,IF things open up by then .
It was pretty chilly when I did it, to be fair.
You just never know… I did IM Nice in 2014 in June, and people were retiring with hypothermia!
IIRC, Symes raced it too… he’ll remember the skinny Italians cycling into T2 in space blankets!
