IM Wales in 2012 was the worst punch up, ever. It was the year after 2011 when loads had legged it across the beach to shorten the swim.
They put a 90 deg turn buoy in, about 100m straight out to sea to stop it happening again. It was one of those very wide starts so loads hit the water in a very short time, all trying to get a tight line round the buoy.
It was just a logjam of flailing neoprene going nowhere; I reckon I could have walked to that turn buoy on the back of everyone else. Think I’d retired from Ironman forever about 3 times en route to that turn.
That was the thing about IM those days, nothing was as bad as the first 5 mins of the swim.

I’m not sure how but I think I missed most of it, remember it being busy but I took a wider line and survived without too much biff.
I went tight, thought ‘it’s only 100m or so, I can take the odd bit of biff for a short time…’, you were probably round it quicker than me swimming 3x as far.

My mate is at 1.05 in, lime green hair, we were racing in aid of his father in law who was in the latter stages of MND. Gavin with the green hair has raced in many Ironman events and Kona twice pretty rapid in his day, his father in law had been to nearly all of his events.
After diagnosis he wanted to go to see Gavin race at one more event, so we went to Lanza on mass. Four participants and about 25 people in total had a super week tinged with sadness.
