I think your 36-28 is fine, the steep bits are short. You might want to get out of the saddle up Wiseman’s on the 2nd lap for a few turns but that would be all.
I’ve got a 34-30
Better to have and not need, than be grinding.
Here comes @doka with his recce from today…
Only my thoughts on this but given none can travel abroad the extra IM exposure isn’t needed to attract holiday makers. Cases here are high & increasing.
Yeah I guess so but would be a bloody shame.
Especially with Bolton going ahead and where that town was a month or so ago.
If it gets binned I might eye up one of the Outlaw September events if space or maybe pay through the nose for the Bolton 70.3
In theory, Newport marathon is still going ahead in Oct, as I’m entered but I can’t see that happening either.
Bolton would welcome the income though, Tenby is already very busy. We had places booked for LCW but it’s full, we tried to get another place since the rules didn’t change from the max of 6 peeps but nothing available.
Pretty sure I was on a 53/39 on the front, although might have had a bespoke 38. Back was either 25/27 as that was about the biggest you could get then.
It was wet and traction was a problem up Wiseman’s I think, was generally ok the rest of the ride although I was a bit lighter then and the hills were pretty much identical to what I ride locally around North Yorkshire.
Also had a disc wheel FWIW.
They are reporting a spike in Tenby
Fairly sure it was Welsh Govt that dropped the hammer on LCW and I’d bet on the same outcome.
A p&sser, as I wanted 2021 to happen so I’d get a chance to do my 6th in 2022.
Agree Tro I have the same thoughts………
School holidays will be over by then though, and will the school holidays break some of the transmission between those age groups or spread it across the country as people go on holiday?
There’s still the same question about breaking the link between cases and hospitalisation / death. The wider country numbers are still indicating that might have happened. If so, then unless you’re Australia / NZ, it does seem like the government are leading us towards the mindset of “living with” some background case numbers, given the statements yesterday about the July ending of restrictions still being on track.
Wales are obviously their own country with regards to rules, but they’ll not want to be too out of step with England
Something this morning said the average age of a positive person has dropped from about 48 to 24, which shows that the vaccines are generally effective.
Trying not to derail the thread though!
Hope it goes ahead, great race and lovely part of the country.
Good to see a balanced view on this (unlike IMW journey). I also did it in 2017 and was hoping for a dry, sunny, wind free ( ) race. Given I’m now approaching the proper long workouts I’d rather have as much notice as possible if its not going ahead, but then I thought Bolton would be canned and thats all set to roll this weekend. I opted for Outlaw X last year once Wales was postponed, that was also bloody cold. Planning on doing the same again if Wales isnt on.
Some snippets from Hundreds compete in Wales Triathlon for government pilot ; ITV News Wales
"The Wales Triathlon saw 500 athletes swim, run and cycle around Fishguard and the Pembrokeshire coast, but spectators were discouraged from attending.
Unlike normal, competitors entered the water two by two, at intervals, and social distancing measures were in place throughout the route, including in transition areas." ← How long would this take for IMW?
He added: “We are conscious that we would normally welcome spectators but this event is different – we are discouraging all spectators from attending, and participating athletes have been asked not to bring supporters with them.”
For me this is the issue with Ironman events and being based in town centres. The local authorities signing off on the race have to be bold to agree on having 2000 odd people come to their town and everything that comes with that.
All the other races I’ve completed post covid have been based in water parks, lakes etc… I guess a much easier sell and more straight forward being covid compliant
That’s how most Ironman races work now. I’ve seen the videos of the “rolling start” at Wales recently, and that’s very very different from everything other than Kona and Lanza from what I’ve experienced.
The main challenge is the space necessary to allow those queuing to maintain some space from one another, rather than being crammed into pens. But releasing a set number of athletes at intervals is not a problem. Outlaw half was 2000+ competitors the other week, and that was 3 athletes every 9s. Copenhagen when I did that in 2018, was 6 athletes every 6s.
Spectators is a different matter, I accept. Issue for me is we’ve booked a week there and all bar me are treating it as our week staycation … I just happen to be doing a race right at the start of the week. But we’re planning on going even if the race is scrubbed
Whilst that is interesting I got distracted by the article about the girl nearly dying from sepsis after being bitten by a spider in Wales
You should always handle spiders Caerphilly.
Rhyl-y? I thought they were fine to hold.
