Ironman Wales 2023

No, they’re just Spesh tri shoes with old Nike inserts

Did you do that @chickenboy? Can’t argue with your bikesplit from last weekend!

Are those fancy pant Huub calf guards too?

And aero shoe covers!

I thought about a camelback down the front. But then it reminded me of the kids that used to wear white football boots back in the day. You had to make sure you were bloody good and could back it up, otherwise you were getting snapped by the big lads!

I don’t have the minerals to back up those sorts of aero claims!

Haha yeah. I’ll start blowing out of my arse as soon as the hills come. Probably that little climb out of the beach towards the Angle loop

Yeah that bit is tricky as there is usually about a 10cm sliver of tarmac that’s not covered in sand.

I’d avoid the nurofen, its not a good mix with endurance activities.

Caffeine pills. I was sceptical over. Sarah brought a stack for TCR. My god they work well when timed correctly. Usually near the end of the day and before a big climb, took about 20-30mins to kick in. They really do lift your mood and energy levels. Not sure how I’d be dropping them on a full IM, maybe mid way on the bike and just before the run?

I think caffeine gels are fine on an IM. It’s only ~12 hrs so I think pro plus is a bit overkill.

On overnight ultras however, like @sowler said, pro plus is the rocket fuel that will get you through the darkest of patches!

Ibuprofen / Nurofen can cause some major issues while doing sport - most people are fine, however, there are cases where small doses can cause liver damage. As a precaution I don’t use ibuprofen while racing any more

Just about to do a lap of the lake in my TT bike… second time I have ridden it since Kona

How are you feeling recovery wise? I’m definitely not 100% yet. I realise your cycling fitness is at a much greater level so maybe you’ve recovered pretty quickly.

I’ve always picked up some nurofen in T2, but haven’t had to use them yet :crossed_fingers:

ProPlus got me out of this hole at Tenby.

So what we can conclude here is that when you tell your daughters they can’t have ice-cream you can cheer them up with pro-plus instead. Seems like a good plan.

Apparently I reply to GB too often!

In more serious news … i did a brick session today. My first and last of the year. AND i used my TT bike.

Tried to ride at around IM intensity. How the flipppin heck am i going to keep the power down at the target watts with all those hills i have no idea!

I think i had my closest ever punishment pass from some absolute see you next tuesday in a Tesla, on a wide 2 lane, straight road. Choice words were uttered. But I genuinely braced myself to be eating tarmac.

TT bikes and Devon roads are not made for each other. They’re horrible, other than the one stretch of more ‘main road’ which was nice … but the drivers were d!ckheads to the factor of 89 instead of the usual 54.

Brick was good. Really going to have to curb my enthusiasm on race day. However a 6-6.30 ride is clearly going to slow me down much more than 50 odd mins! Still, very encouraging to be clipping along at a tidy pace for good HR return.

I think this might be my favourite action (?) shot ever. I can hear your internal monologue from here.
