Ironman Wales 2023

Definitely the sensible decision. And I’m sure we all know how hard it is to actually make the decision to stop so well done for doing so.

I can’t believe you’ve done what you’ve done this year after another newborn, so definitely nothing to prove!

Right decision

Plenty more races, only one foot ( well obvs two)

It looked a great race well done

Sorry it turned out like that mate but the right decision for sure. Give yourself a bit of time to figure what happened and don’t be hard on yourself.

@JD-Scarabtri well done :clap:t3: :clap:t3::clap:t3:

Both races this year have been a big disappointment though. But to be fair I can’t put in the hours that full distances races require - it’ll be 70.3 maximum for the next few years

Really enjoyed following the build up & race day for this IM. So much easier than actually doing one

Sounds like a tough day with the random heat, great efforts all round

That pic of transition…

@Adam sounds a good decision to pull up, there’s no fun in a 7 hours hobble and a damaged foot for ages after. There’ll be another day :muscle:

OK, so I don’t think I’ve ever been this broken after a race before. My legs are flippin ruined!

Feel OK in myself despite a really crap sleep. But the legs are something else.

Haven’t caught up with the thread yet… Hope all the other boys brought it home and had a great day. It was a tough ol day.

But if anyone asks can you finish IM Tenby with an average of 4 hours training, the answer is yes. But it’ll hurt, you’ll go to a dark place and I don’t advise it.

Just sub 16 for me, my worst finish but I’ll take it, I thought I was in for a dnf.

Apologies to @Doonhamer , he met a shell of a man, in shit state and not at home. Thanks for your support buddy and for keeping things confidential :grinning:

It occurred to me yesterday, Tenby is my Kona. I’ll explain that better when I do a race report. It’ll be a few days as we’re away for a couple of days now.

Well done @Bob great stuff.

Yeah echo the points for MVP of the day @Doonhamer. What a bloody massive legend!

You all did fantastically well, looking forward to comparing notes! And @Matthew_Spooner you’re just a wrong 'un. 3rd in AG weeks after TCR. That’s not normal! :joy:

Well done, @Bob! :+1:

My quads blew on the first lap of Wiseman’s. No idea how I did the mara - beyond shuffling that is :slightly_smiling_face:

Last night I couldn’t move, I haven’t got out of bed yet, I’m kinda scared to.

Well done all, awesome efforts all around

Adam at least you live to fight another day without long term damage - a tough but sensible decision.

Great support and updates all esp @Doonhamer

Looking forward to reading all of the race reports. Will your pain, agony and ecstasy make me happy that my only pain yesterday was revision for promotion interview , or, as a sun god, inspire me to another IM (nice hot weather permitting, of course) :sunglasses: :face_with_monocle:

It takes a lot of experience knowing when to pull out. You did the right thing. The disappointment will pass quickly, a foot injury takes ages

This is the key point. I can’t even put in the hours to toe the start line of a 70.3, so to just get around IMUK was :ok_hand:

My brief race report.

Swim went much better than expected…. OK 1:24 is hardly good, but it’s no disaster, I was expecting at least 1;30. Great swim course and lovely water temp

Bike, started pretty hard on a really crowded course. For first 70k i was flying, however my neck is still not brilliant after TCR and spending a lot of time on aerobars was difficult. Also my bike gearing was horrible, some of those hills are bloody steep, especially wiseman’s. I was grinding away and wishing for a compact chainset and 11-32 cassette. On second lap I decided to back off and leave some legs for the run…. As a result I really enjoyed the 2nd lap, I was still passing loads of people and was only passed by one or 2 other riders. Got my nutrition bank on and consume all of my Maurten 6 sachets of 320cal mix…. It’s a lot of carbs however I seem to handle it well.

Lost a ton of time on the descents, just no idea how tight corners were. People would pass me and i would pass them again on the climbs. Some people taking massive risks on descents. On guy on a Cannondale Spice was racing me the whole of lap 1 - he was much faster descending. On the descent towards Tenby, he passed me. But managed to clip the traffic island with his pedal - bike went into the air… somehow he held it, he was doing 60+ kph and would have been. Horrible crash. I passed him just after, never saw him again, suspect he was a lot more cautious on lap 2. 6h dead on the bike

Run was great. I didn’t want to get carried away and settled into a nice Zone 2 effort, with a big focus on nutrition and hydration…. I think I may have a negative split. A few people passed me at the start, but then I set about reeling them all back in. Every lap I got twinges of cramp just before Tenby, had to ease off a little and 1min later I would be fine again. Great support on the run, however, i was careful not to get carried away and push as we went through the town

With 6km to go @Doonhamer said that I was in 4th and should empty the tank, which is what i did - a big cup of RedBull and I had wings. At the end

Had to set of at 2am to catch flight from LHR. Bit tired but legs are in great shape

Also noticed while packing that I snapped the carbon sole on my shoe at the back… to be fair they got an absolute beating on TCR. They are only 6 months old so will see if warantee covers damage

Sterling work everyone! Impressive stuff @Matthew_Spooner did you know which guy you needed to overtake to snatch 3rd? And 2am flight after that is savage!

No idea who I needed to pass and no idea how far ahead he was, but thought I would just push as hard as I could and hope. Actually the guy was behind me… i think I passed him at the start of the final lap, however as he started the swim after me he was ahead on time… I only knew this after I finished. If it’s the guy I think it is, we came out of T2 together, he set off way faster than me, he didn’t look in great shape when I passed him, he tried to follow but he had to walk the steep section of the climb.

Or is it all electronic now?

No im really not motivated by Kona, no idea what it costs, but this year was $1600 for nice.
