Kipchoge’s/Your ten essential items

Hang on hang on

Where’s oxygen in there?

That exists anyhow.
So doesn’t count :+1:t3:

Food, water, shelter isn’t it?

I think @joex needs to be what he’s always telling others to be…more specific

Essential isn’t the same as important.
And dues he mean in general, running, or triathlon?

But water exists anyway, unless racing on Mars and even then perhaps.

How come you’re allowed water and I’m not allowed air😄

I guess it’s not essential for a duathlon though  so, fair.

Not where you’re going, it don’t :joy::qatar:

You are right though about other important stuff on life needing to be in place, I think.

Eg. right now with a bunch of things to sort on the home and away fronts, I just don’t want to think about training and racing. Hopefully in a few weeks time will get back on the bus though.

That was me for a lot of 2021 and 2022 :+1:t3:

Right, I’ve watched the video - so I understand (but I don’t!) that clothing doesn’t come into it, or nutrition (but then he mentions his shoes and jacket, but no shorts, socks or vest - leaving me confused slightly), therefore I can focus on what I tend to take away with me…

  1. I started this off by running, it’s my favourite, even though I’ve been doing less of it, so my first item would be my Nike 4% - they pack nice and light and can also be used for the airport, too. Winner!
  2. Phone - not going anywhere without those boarding passes, can also record activities on it. And post them. And check what you lot are moaning about
  3. Same headphones as he said. Bone conducting let you listen to music, whilst also hearing what’s going on around you (ish) - I love running with music (and cycling), so I always pack headphones, too
  4. 2XU Compression shorts with chamois. Trifecta with these. Can run in them (full junk bouncing around for all to see), cycle in them (I’ve done IMs in them) and also swim in them. Winner, winner, chicken dinner :poultry_leg: :fries: :plate_with_cutlery:
  5. Goggles to swim in. Don’t need owt else, got me jammers and me goggles, leave the toys, boom :boom:
  6. Wahoo Kickr bike - it’s a bike, power pedals and trainer in one, so I get more items
  7. A full matching set of Rapha/MAAP/Castelli kit for every 2-3° window (<0, 0-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-11, 13-15, 16-18, 19-21, 22+…yeah, erm, I actually have more than that  :joy:)
  8. Coffee. Used to flush the bowels pre-exercise, during exercise for a lift and post-exercise so that I can get on with my day. It’s like a legal cocaine/amphetamine substitute.
  9. Like @JoeX says, a J-O-B to pay for all of this shizzle
  10. Last, but not least, is a candle. What better than after a hard day on the bike, than to come home, shower, eat, then relax with the scent of Gwyneth Paltrow’s vagina filling the house?

It’s a bike? What sort of IM bike split do you reckon you could knock out on it?

In true @joex style; have you watched the video?

I think we can assume we have an outdoor bike.
As the “minimum viable product” to complete a triathlon.

That’s probably true actually. If you were only allowed one piece of equipment to do a Tri, I guess it would have to be an actual bike right?

You’d probably get DQ for no helmet & nudity, and barefoot riding/ running might give you blisters. But it would still be a triathlon & you could complete it.

I’m wondering what would be #2 piece of kit, if you were allowed 2. Clothes? Shoes? Helmet?

Think for me bike> trisuit> shoes> helmet

If you didn’t do Virtual Kona during The Plague, are you even an Ironman…?

Quite right, it’s more like “what’s your favourite kit” than what’s your essential: Kipchoge really loves a particular model of headphones (we are led to believe) and a hand written training diary.

Sometimes it’s a bit more than “favourite” and you really love something, so that’s what’s being asked.

Without indoor training I would not be a triathlete, full stop. If I had to go outside away from the home 10+hrs per week In simply wouldn’t be doing it. I’d be a gardener.

I really think certain bits of kit are inspiring; my decent bits from Argon18, Nike, SciCon and Huub help inspire me to get up and training or out and racing. TrainerRoad and Zwift should have been mentioned come to think of it.

@stenard put me onto these back in 2019.

In true Biblical “Doubting Thomas” style, I couldn’t see how a £213.95 pair of shoes could make you run 4% faster …

… HOLY CRACK :syringe:
They arrived and utterly blew me away.
Nike changed the game with them.

Just look at all of the age grading and GFA times, they’ve all tumbled in the past four years (although this could coincide with people training “full time” during furlough/lockdown/WFH? But I’ll say it’s the shoes)

Also - those headphones he says he uses are actually The Biz

Agree. But then that video “stuff” is blown apart by the podcasts he’s doing. In the interview with Rangan Chatterjee he says he only listens to music to relax. And only uses his phone for short periods in the day.

I get that he needs them all but the only part about that video that seems accurate is his journaling. :woman_shrugging:t4:
