Kona 25

No, Lanza was double achillies problems and Copenhagen was breathing issues post covid. Really frustrating for the latter.

I hear you on this :pensive:
Not sure I’ve had Covid, but probably have, as I’ve said elsewhere, my asthma is bad now.

Or I’m just overweight and unfit :person_shrugging:t3:

How many IM races do you have to finish to qualify for legacy?

12 spread over a few years, not too sure how many five or more I think, then two in consecutive years with an entry in for the following year. For me it would be this year ticked, next year full IM and then enter a half or full to be entered into the 2024 draw I think and being IM there’s a fee to join the waiting list! as if doing 13 events minimum isn’t spending quite enough with them.

AS i said on the other thread, I have now finally been diagnosed with long covid and have exactly the same sort of symptoms as you. Asthma took a real turn for the worse after Covid. to be fair i didnt think Id had it last summer, and after years of no problems I started to need my blue inhaler more last summer about the time I had my second vax, hadnt had a puff in about 5 years!. I’m starting to think more that either the vax or a mild dose of covid around the same time (that wasn’t noticeable because of the second jab) set that off also

they recon it could be as much as 15 as the waiting list keeps growing and you have to validate each year until you get in

about time you joined the rest of the IM retirees. 11 years since I did my last one and don’t miss all the training needed for them

I like the build-up to them but am too old to be screwed over by something relatively out of my control such as the covid thing and having a crap long day out. Annoying as August was my second best swim and best bike (granted they were low bars!), what a pisser.

Training? You are doing it all wrong…

Last minute entry is all the rage these days, don’t you know? :eyes::grin:

Train all year then if you’re healthy, and flights are cheap, enter a race.

WOAH!!!

That is far cheaper than I was expecting :open_mouth:
I suppose the exchange rate is utterly diabolical presently, so looking at about £6k for a solo jaunt.

Also, food and meals are far cheaper than what I’d usually budget for

What was it like alone?
What was the accom like for that price - I wouldn’t be expecting the Burj for that, but clean and functional.
Did you make many pals, or do you enjoy solo jaunts?

No IMWC towel?

Just sent this on to a friends daughter who has little concept of how much all this costs but has a partner who thinks it’s “Ironman or nothing”. Her response…

The place I stayed at was absolutely fantastic https://www.bigislandretreat.com/

If I ever go back I will look here first. Massive clean room, massive balcony enclosed by insect net, great self catering facility, huge shared outdoor kitchen. Its 7km from Kona, on Ali’i Drive, there is hire bike station 200m away ($3.50 for 30 mins). Its away from the madness in Kona, but easily accessible, there is no problem parking in Kona. The hotel is an 100 year old colonial style building, lots of character. Its just 100m from the beach. Kahaluu-Keauhou shopping centre is 1km away

It’s not massive, maybe 10 rooms, all occupied by IM athletes, I got to know 4 of the people staying there. Far nicer than an inpersonal hotel

I got 2 free towels, thats plenty

Really interesting

What do you reckon the extra cost would have been with a spectator? Just the $1500 flight + food, or would the hotel etc have been more too?

Thanks, @Matthew_Spooner :love_you_gesture:

I stayed 8km away in Mallorca in a large villa, that was probably the best part of the holiday for me.
Just away from the “bustle” of Pollenca, in some quiet out-of-season backwater, which was really pretty and nice.
So that place looks good.

Bike hire seems expensive!!!

Show us the towels, then…love me an event towel.
Still got my Bala towels from <2010 for the dogs - ha ha ha!
Far better than a backpack, technical t-shirt of stuff like that, IMO.

@fruit_thief Hotel was booked for 2, unfortunately my wife had to stay as my DD started university on 2 Oct and my wife wanted to take her and make sure she was settled in. I recon flight + max $500 for a partner, there’s not a massive amount to spend money on in Kona other than poor quality overpriced Ironman Merch. However, if taking a partner, I would stay an extra week, hotels will be at least half the cost of IM week, but factor in things like a diving boat and trip to rain forest

@Poet It was a shame my wife didn’t come. But being totally honest I prefer to be alone just before a race, I am probably not the best person to be around either. It would have been great to take a week holiday after, but with a new job, couldnt make it work

Someone is getting tempted to take their slot next year

I only did one trip on hire bike, I ran into town once, and drove to town multiple times. The bike is $3.50 for one 30 min trip or $10 for unlimited 30 min trips in 24 hours. Just need to return bike to a bike station within 30 mins otherwise get charged $4.50. There’s a bus too

I reckon if I ever got a KQ Mrs W would drive those cost up way higher than Spooner got away with

Nice hotels, nice restaurants, day trips etc
