Kona 25

Holy shit, check out this crib!

Hmmmm. Also might have just done a 180 after ruling it out last weekend :joy:

From Aus flights are probably cheaper and certainly much shorter. I think my hotel was a bargain. Not sure if it will be the same next year.

@Poet lots of people living off grid… so its possible

I’ve did a fair amount of digging, and am staying in a guest house, quite basic but c2200 dollars for 17 nights. It’s 3-4 miles from town, Ali’i drive.

I booked and paid all up front, mainly as I thought a long stay already paid for was less likely to be gouged, but also lucked out when the £ crashed a short time later!!

I may keep the entire booking but hop over to Maui post race. Only iffy thing is there’s lots of talk about wellness and that sort of thing, so it may be some sort of hippy commune:rofl::rofl::rofl:

I’ve watched the first 10 seconds and Mark Threlfall has said (not for the first time on GTN)… “We’re back… on the island of Kona”. FFS how to make yourself sound like an idiot or what. The island is called Hawaii, not feckin’ Kona.

Interesting article here looking at top 10 men’s and womens times over the years

Points out that although times have come down for both men and women, the closest remains 1988 when PNF finished 11th overall :flushed:

Lots of different start formats across that period though? Didn’t PNF etc start in the mass start so plenty of (legal) draft opportunities off pro men.

When did they start seperate pro men/women waves?

Also just noticed the article is a couple of years old

Would be interesting to see update. The message of the article from 2018/9 seemed to be that almost all the gains had been made on the bike, wonder if that’s changed now

Just seeing Kona price. I KQed in 2021 and paid 1100 inc tax and admin rip off fee. Now its 1600 inc tax and admin rip off. This is becoming crazy.

Is that the USD price? In GBP terms it must look even worse :open_mouth:

Yes USD. Joe Skipper feels that IM are taking advantage of pros, but its the same with AG as well.

What is the price elasticity of ironman races, we must be close to breaking poing

Plenty of stories too that the decals have started falling off the medals and print peeling off the finish shirts.

Re the price elasticity point: they will keep pushing until they find it, even if it isn’t now.

What does a “normal” IM race cost now? I didn’t realise that it was such a premium for a Kona entry

Clearly I’m the poor person around here who thinks that is affordable! :joy: But I suspect I’m bottom percentile of earners around here.

Its mainly the hotel price and car hire that makes me baulk at that. I’d also expect flight prices to go up considerably by next year too!

Dont get medal wet, shirt is the poorest quality i have ever received, back pack is shit. They probably saved $20 per athlete.

However event was great and towels are nice
