Assuming it is Nice and it’s 2 laps of the 70.3 course I didn’t think the descent was that bad and I’m not a descender. Although having my rear brake binding probably slowed me down
Nice is a nice place though, back part of town is a bit hit and miss but the front and old town are
I don’t know what the 70.3 loop was, but I doubt if 2 laps of that would work because I assume there was a flat run out from the start to join the main course and then a return on the same section.
“If the race course or Event is changed, modified, delayed, or cancelled for any reason, including but not limited to acts of God or the elements (including without limitation, wind, rough water, rain, hail, hurricane, tornado, earthquake), acts of terrorism, fire, threatened or actual strike, labor difficulty, work stoppage, insurrection, war, public disaster, public health risks, pandemic, flood, unavoidable casualty, race course conditions, or any other cause beyond the control of WTC/Organizer, there will be no refund of WTC/Organizer’s entry fee or any other costs incurred in connection with the Event. WTC/Organizer may, in its sole discretion, offer an automatic entry for a later date or a transfer to another event to be chosen by WTC/Organizer.”
They’ve said it’s a 2 day race.
If island are saying no to that and IM have tried to reconciliate I’m sure they’d argue it’s not their control.
The suggestion of 2x Kona races a month apart could be an option for 2023 only.
BUT it does nothing to help those that have paid, which is the only group being screwed (reply to @fatpom). Those with their heart on Kona can defer a year.
The males who’ve booked a race in now purely with intent of qualifying have been a bit put out, to lesser degree.
Will they move the qualification window though? If Nice is earlier, then 2023 qual shuts earlier and 2024 opens earlier. Bolton may be the ideal Kona 24 slot hunt?
Didn’t the Edinburgh 70.3 have slots for 2 different WC at the same race, as the windows overlapped?
I’ve done both the full and 70.3 in Nice. The full course diverges on the first big climb and heads off further into the countryside (and some extra climbs).
I was on my TT for both times and pretty sure I wouldn’t have been much (if any) faster on the climbs on my road bikes and definitely would’ve been slower on some parts where you can get aero. Depends what you’re comfortable with I guess, but I was overtaking loads of people on descents who clearly weren’t that happy
That looks a bit different from the one I raced in 2009.
Apart from feeling sick for most of the long climb after drinking too much sea water, my main memory of the bike course is rounding blind bends and finding riders in the deck in front of me😳. It happened 3 times.
The pebble beach wasn’t nice on the feet at the start and the start of the swim was a complete brawl with 3000 people in a mass start, but I guess it’s a rolling start now.
Nice is really lovely though. We stayed on for a week after the IM and went to Monaco to watch the start of the Tour
Then it would not
Generally, the guys up here in my age group are all absolutely brilliant athletes, but they are all built like brick shit houses (i.e. not great at proper climbs, good at the punchy stuff) - they all seem to be pretty “normal” and have families, etc (just from podcasts, local papers), so I think they’d relish the opportunity to plan a year in advance.
Both from a performance, and financial, standpoint.
Also, see my earlier point RE: Sabbatical
I’ve waited a little over three years for this one and am really looking forward to it, so don’t want to delay it another year
Obviously doesn’t impact me in any way at all but I’m intrigued by Ironman defining two separate races on opposite sides of the world as a ‘co-hosted 2 day event’. That’s some impressive spinning.
Really sucks for those who have already shelled out for flights and accommodation. Hopefully insurance covers it…
I did Nice in 2014. Great bike route and I found myself and one other person hammering the descent back down the mountain towards the end of the bike route. We took plenty of risks and rode like nutters but as we didn’t crash it was great. I’d be too scared to ride like that nowadays. Maybe I’ve grown up.
Got to T2 in one piece just as it was starting to spit with rain and then promptly slipped up between the dismount line and transition racking!
The run was OK, other than the smell of pi$$ near the toilets at the airport end which got progressively worse during each lap of the run.
