Kona 25

How about, this is my profession, not getting any money for this today, but if I stop now I can go again in a week or 2.

Well several were on the bike.

Zac Cooper started showing on the splits after being stopped at 100km for hours so who knows what happen there. Broom wagon with timing chip still on?

Protrinews talked about it being an easy race to DNF on the run due to you always being aware of how far up the road the race is because of the four lap course. Much so than Kona where there’s only a couple of out and back parts.

Sam Laidlow said at the press conference that “the Norwegian train now has an extra carriage - and it’s pretty good” :+1:

3 of the top 5!

Also said best Skipper would do is top 30, TBF it was solid enough day for him given a few recent woes.

TC under 4K to go and looking like 3:42 on the run which is pretty good, he gets his stride and runs all day.

Fair play to Paddy L. Absolutely miles off the race yet still put in the 2nd best run of the day to Maurten move his way up to 9th. When you’re already a multiple world champ, and not the youngest gent on the course, that’s some serious focus and discipline to still put that run in. :flexed_biceps:

It’s a real shame that the WC won’t be in nice. This course is class. Bike course is probably my favorite of any IM. Swim is lovely, I really enjoyed it. Run has a massive mental challenge that you can see pretty much the whole course from turn around and 5km looks bloody long. Support is good, but nothing like Roth or Wales.

Knowing the descents is a huge advantage on the bike. I was on and off the aerobars as I didn’t know how fast you can take the corners. Loads of crashes and athletes being seen to by medics

From a quick look at the route I guess it’s the backbone of the course that @Whisk & myself have done back in the day.

If so I’m 100% in agreement with you as to how good the course is, I think cycling that plateau after cresting the Col de l’Êcre was the reason that I’ve dragged my family to France for the last 15yrs :france: :person_mountain_biking: :pinched_fingers:

You usually see it when you’re in it, but some of the scenes were really nice, the early morning sun on the beach and Nice, the mountain roads.

I’ve done the route virtually on Rouvy a few times or parts of it, so weirdly watching the race I felt like I was remembering being there.

Maybe we can keep it as the European fans WC race?

$12,000 payday compared to nothing probably helps the mind focus too

8:41 for the overall age group winner, from 25-29. Very dominant win with 2nd place overall (30-34 winner) 9:01.

Decent time as well for M65

Shades of Julie Moss.

Not very responsible of the organisers letting him continue if he was repeatedly falling over on his last lap

10 days to go for the ladies race and it should be interesting at the pointy end. Quite a few GB in the field.

Anyone sticking their neck out? This looks like the top 6 and I’m not sure anyone else will get a podium, but it happened in the men’s race!

1 Laura Philipp DEU
2 Kat Matthews GBR
3 Chelsea Sodaro USA
4 Marjolaine Pierre FRA
5 Lucy Charles-Barclay GBR
6 Taylor Knibb

Expecting LCB to be out of the water first  will Knibb drag the others back or will the extended draft zone make that harder. If it’s close going onto the run I’m guessing Philip will run away?

Yeah a tough call. LCB seems to be in good form. She’s used to going gun to tape, doing her own thing.

Really tough to call though.

I’m currently leaning towards

  1. Lucy
  2. Laura
  3. Kat

Not on your list and

Of those listed, Sodaro has the best proven marathon I think? Knibb an unknown quantity, LCB needs a lead off the bike, but not as much as she once did.

No idea on form but I would go

  1. LCB
  2. Sodaro
  3. Knibb

I thought that initially - she’s at the top in bold
