I think live commentary isn’t his forté but I did enjoy his interview on Breakfast with Bob from yesterday.

How hard is it to hand out a water bottle? Felt for Taylor Knibb there

Pretty hard if youve never done it. Rigid

You have to run in little circles. A few steps to match the rider speed and then circle to pick up another. You need space between the vollies. I’ve manned loads of IM and non IM aid stations, you’d be amazed how far you run ‘standing still’.

Now, when I’m on the bikle and coming into a station, I point directly at the vollie I’m taking the bottle from, once you’ve locked eyes and identified them, it very rarely goes wrong.

Well we’ll, who’d ve thunk it?

Looks like a brutal run.

Just before I checked out last night think Michele Jones correctly predicted the winner on the commentary, while they still had about 30km to go on the bike- that’s impressive!

edit - and @Chriswim on the kona chat too by the look of things

Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but LCB overbiked trying to make up the 1 minute penalty. Both LCB and TK went too hard in the first 10k of the run (2:50 pace, minutes quicker than either had done before).

LCB in particular made the catch and pass up Palani and probably never got her body temp under control again.

They destroyed each other really.

I think in some races you can put out a hard early 10k and then ‘recover’, but here you overheat and just can’t get it back. I can almost hear TC imploring everyone to walk up Palani

So effectively the penalty ruined both their races. Without it they bike to the end together and start the run slower.

Just read about the race.

wow!!! Sounds brutal.

But someone ran a 2:47, so can’t have been that bad!

Either TK or LCB would have won with a c3:00 marathon - ie Solveig and KM would not have run them down. Both probably could have run 3:00, but they tried to run at 2:50 pace to break the other.

If yesterdays race dynamics during the run happened on a day with both men and women racing they’d miss out so much action on the broadcast as the men would be finishing whilst it’s all kicking off on the run. Maybe they need to think this one through. Two video feeds (men and women)? They have have a single “broadcast” feed with commentary but just give us a straight video of each race.

A bit like a few years ago where they had multiple screens and you could choose which one to view, I just don’t think a “quad box” or whatever we’ve seen a bit of this year in T100 etc. would do justice for what we saw last night,

Crikey, I missed the action! Sounds brutal for them both but even at our level when you’ve gone there’s no coming back, or a walk ahead.

It’ll be interesting next year to see if the slower pro men and faster AG men start causing problems for the women and n the bike.

Edit: shame Kat was so close and ran out of tarmac.
