I thought that when I just saw a pic of him in his bike. Only a few days ago he has that big ugly not disc / so oat disc HED wheelset on. I just assumed he was using other wheels for training whilst they got customised or something.
Madness!

What’s wrong? No cool kayak world champs to waste 8 hours watching this weekend?
You should be cheering on Braden Currie. He’s close to your own now!
Oh no, I’m a doer not a watcher
No such thing as bad press …!
Hed/ conti must love him.
But your right of course, that’s why we love him, probably got the talent to win, makes some mind blowing decisions, comes close then goes back to what never worked in the first place.
Crazy guy, I still like him
That’s what sh…
Every. Bloody. Time.
Makes some crazy last minute change that sabotages his race.
Says that he needs to change his ways, get a coach and do exactly what they say.
Makes some crazy last minute change etc etc
(he’ll probably go and win the thing now )
Looks amazing over there, pretty excited for our racers there!
Skybet have markets open for both the womens and mens race. Lange 8/1, Skipper 12/1!
Which one has transitioned into the women’s race? Nevermind, Ryf probably still the favourite.
It does, but it includes so many boom and busts that I still see him as the outsider who could on the right day, rather than a more dependable pick.
Kind of see what you are saying, as he had a couple of shockers in Kona (if you can call top 25 a shocker)
But apart from that the guy has been super consistent. If I’m reading this right, in his last 15 races he only finished outside of the top 2 twice. One was Ironman CdA 2021 where I think he said he just ran out of juice, at the other was 4th at Challenge Daytona 2020.
Took me a couple of years to warm to him, but have really enjoyed following his career and would love it to come good for him this year.
Gustav Iden on the other hand, AFAIK he only has one IM to his name? Admittedly a 7.42 . Anyway, who knows but it’s all good fun
. Way things are going, Kona will probably be won by @SidSnot anyway
Fair. Much more impressive than I imagined, thought he was more a 70.3. I’ll admit I very loosely follow pro-tri especially before this year.
My experience getting into the sport 2018-2019 was of him being touted everywhere as the potential winner, being right at the front and then fading out of significance in the marathons. Harsh, but 3:15 marathons were amongst slowest of pro field both years, and that’s all I’ve seen of him Kona wise. Not sure I even know about his 2nd place at that time.
Worried it’s Thursday evening and I’d managed to miss Kona, then realised I’m pretty much a day ahead here in Aus. Wish it worked like that and I could go to the bookies.
One more sleep, big dance tomorrow @Matthew_Spooner @SidSnot
I do get the feeling sometimes that perhaps Lionel is hamming it up a bit.
I think he’s the publicity arm of the Norwegian operation, ie with Lionel on the team, being Lionel there’s lots of interest mainly because we’re all ghouls waiting for the pre race cock up, the marathon explosion and then the tearful post race vlog.
Following the meticulous scientific methods of the Norwegians would be dull, and would not make much of a splash in the modern social media world. This way they can do their thing, but get way more exposure doing it in the company of the sport’s reality TV star.
I just can’t fully accept he’s THAT stupid?
Except KB and GI ran the marathon course on 2 October in 2h31m. En direction Palani ! | Run | Strava
There has been lots of talk about this in Kona, mainly WTF
Same here, can do a 1900m TT though as a gesture?
Will find out if I can book consecutive sessions.
Just back from the pool gents. Not a very high bar… 1h08m32s. But a negative split, just: 34m25 and 34m07.
I’d forgotten how far 3800m is to swim … Hardly surpising as it’s probably been 15 years since the last time
Good luck later @Matthew_Spooner and on Saturday @SidSnot - if those are the right days
Good luck @Matthew_Spooner & @SidSnot.
(I haven’t missed anyone else have I?)
And in the words of Meatloaf…
“Two out of three ain’t bad.”
Cheers, Paul.
A beautiful bike, magnificent scenery, a primed and ready athlete……but trotters can’t be unseen…
Looking forward to the tracking and coverage tonight. Where has that 4 years gone?
Is @SidSnot in the Thursday race as well?
