Kona 25

 I did hammer once. When I told people my distance they thought I had done the triple jump…

Also one memorable meeting when I jumped higher in the high jump than I did in the pole vault. The things we did for a point…

USD1.14/£ isn’t going to help anyone going to Kona (or St George for the 70.3 champs) this year :open_mouth:

Trying not to dwell on it, especially as some my hotels are pay later!

Crazy to think that when I did the first 70.3 champs in Clearwater in 2006 the rate was something like $1.80/£.

I went to NY in 2006; it was effectively $2/£ in the Summer. Then I went to Germany, and everything was really cheap on the US Bases because of the exchange rate. It was also around €1.44/£ and I got paid at 1.5 so it really was happy days!

Labour govt you see = strong Pound

I see in 2007 it hit 2.11 :astonished:

Yeah, my wife’s been to NY a few times and that was what they used to reckon on when they used to go.

Crazy times

And it’s not like things in America are cheap either!

Those were the days when people used to go to NY for the weekend with an empty bike box, buy a bike, ride it around a bit to get some dirt on it to make it look “used” and fly home and it would still work out cheaper than buying the bike in the UK

I think my sister bought a camera lens over there, posted the empty box and brought it back in hand luggage, got a nearly free holiday!

Can we export stuff to them now :joy:

I few tried that in Oz for exactly the same reason but unfortunately, there were two very keen cyclists that worked in Customs and more than a few were caught out by their knowledge

Other thing was to fly out with a near empty case, and buy a year’s worth of clothes to come back with.

San Francisco was chuffing extortionate in June. And the exchange rate was much better then (quite glad I got enough dollars out for St George as well back then so have 1.2k dollars left to help take the sting out of StG).

Arse, I’m going there before StG :grimacing:

I’ve been buying quite a bit of prosthetic stuff from the US from Ebay, everything is available there and absolutely nothing there. I’ve paid a far bit in import tax & postage which often amount to more than the actual item price.
If I’d been able to buy everything in one go (knowing all I want/needed) I could have paid for a trip over there no bother.

Homelessness and street drug use in San Fran is shocking atm as well.

Been there 4/5 times, loved the place but feeling this June was ‘magic gone a bit, probably won’t be back’

Muir Woods was still f&*king awesome though…

Sorry…enjoy anyway!

I use a forwarding service - MyUS - which gives me a shipping address in the US

Parcel arrives with them
You tell them the “value” which they put on the customs form
Then they give you a choice of shipping services.

Had no issues with it so far and it’s saved me a bunch

Thanks, I’ll look into that :+1:

What’s the date for Kona this year? Is it before or after SG?
