St George a couple of weeks later Oct 28/29.
Not expecting many to double up🤣
Plenty of recovery in 2 weeks!
They just need to have a word with TC ![]()
Is there one on the mainland of US TC could slot into the spare weekend. …
I’m in Charlotte NC at the moment… San Diego was expensive in May, its getting worse! dinner, starter, main and 2 beers is costing around $80. We are talking chicken wings and burger, not fillet stake. CHF has dropped 4% to dollar this year, while pound and Euro are down 20% plus. Basically the US has become more expensive than Switzerland, it’s madness
Eh???
That’s how much it is here!!!
Local American smokehouse ( we go here, or the one by the river in Chester, monthly)

You eat 2 x starters and 2 x desserts as part of a 3 course meal?!
(and churros … just no!!!)
What’s wrong with churros?
Sorry - that’s for two.
If @Matthew_Spooner means it’s $80 for one ![]()

![]()
Then that is truly insane (unless that was in the hotel, or the place over the road, in which case they always scalp thee) ![]()
That’s nowhere near the same comparison. (I can see you’ve realised now)
Anyway, if you want a challenge, go on a work trip to Stockholm with a €50 per diem limit. ![]()
Yeah i was assuming he meant solo, as he’s on business.
Churros … oh man. Deep fried, whatever it’s supposed to be, dipped in sweet stuff. No thanks!
“I’ll have a water and a croissant please”
you might have to split it ![]()
That’s quite some dinner, you wouldn’t want to hop straight on the turbo to do Bologna TT for a few hours after ![]()
Yeah - I missed that ![]()
![]()
When I’m away on business, generally go out with someone or take the client out, so don’t see a “single person” bill.
My bad ![]()
I do find when people go away and say things are “expensive” a bit weird. As they’re generally comparing apples to oranges.
“Well I can get a burger, chips and a pint at Spoons for £7”
Erm, yeah. True, but y’know.
“A box of cereal is free from the food bank. It was €5 in Paris”
Erm. Okay.
You know, stuff like that.
@gingerbongo - deep fried sweet batter dipped in chocolate sauce and coated in cinnamon sugar? Amazing ![]()

I’m used to travelling but have you been to Stockholm? It’s next level expensive!
I was reading with interest the other day about people harking back to when the pound was strong but it doesn’t tell the whole story. When i moved to Oz, the £ was just under 3:1 with the $. Great! kind of but it doesn’t take into account the cost of things.
For example, i was looking at some trainers before I very first left for Oz and they were £19.99 here but I left it, knowing the exch rate was good. The cheapest I could find those trainers in Sydney was $70, so 3:1 meant absolutely nothing in a straight comparison. There were a load of examples like that, especially with guitar stuff.
Petrol was mental cheap though, shame I didn’t have a car ![]()
Nah. Doesn’t look like there’s much to do ![]()
But prices there are mainly down to high wages for service staff and high taxes to keep the place nice. Same with other Scandinavian countries.
I can get behind that ![]()
Yeah, Oz was $2.70 to £1 when I went.
I recall it being “cheap” … but loadsa people were moaning about GST. For a laid back country, I remember thinking they moan a lot ![]()

I thought better of @Matthew_Spooner ![]()
Who has a meat starter and meat main? ![]()
![]()
Also, two beers whilst away on business ? ![]()
Don’t want Finance seeing that. Get those on a desperate receipt ![]()
(That’s why I assumed it was two people! I’d class wings as a main. And two beers. One each)
Here’s a secret, Oz isn’t anywhere near as laid back as those who watch Freddie Flintoff-esque travel programs think it is.
GST was a shitbomb that needed to happen, as the blackmarket and cash in hand economy was out of control. Trouble is, it came in just about the same time as compulsory super, and that didn’t land well, as those of use working above threshold instantly had our contracts reduced by 9%. (it works differently now).
Aussies moan a shit ton, they’re just in denial about it. ![]()
It’s American ‘beer’ remember.
GST?
