Kona 25

Not all that many years ago I seem to recall Mark Allen being interviewed (??IMtalk podcast) about whether we would ever see a sub 8 at Kona. He gave a guarded yes - perfect conditions and a competitive race.

Crazy how things move on, 7.40

Wonder if anyone correctly predicted the top 3 in the turbo trainer give away challenge , either men or women?

Yeah I was thinking it was a good weekend for the bookies. Not many had sodero or laidlow for podiums.

@SidSnot and @Matthew_Spooner both cracking times in Kona :trophy::trophy: . Quite close weren’t you? Who gets TT world champ bragging rights this year?

I’m must have got the tracker wrong, lots of people I was tracking “ lost “ 30 mins towards the end of the marathon in projected time ?!

Up until 2018 no one had gone sub 8 when 2 did, another 2 in 2019 and then this. I know it was a good day out there but that’s some jump. The men were due a jump, after the way the womens times have jumped, but still incredible depth of quality.

Podium?
All rookies :exploding_head:

To put the conditions and class of field in perspective, the top four finishers now own the fastest four finishes in Kona of all time. All of the top 10 finishers were under 8 hours, including Ditlev, Mignon, and Lange who all served five minute penalties.

I guess drafting most of the bike leg helps with bike/run times :face_with_peeking_eye:

  1. Gustav Iden 7:40:24
  2. Sam Laidlow 7:42:24
  3. Kristian Blummenfelt 7:43:23
  4. Max Neumann 7:44:44
  5. Joe Skipper 7:54:05
  6. Sebastian Kienle 7:55:40
  7. Leon Chevalier 7:55:52
  8. Magnus Ditlev 7:56:38
  9. Clement Mignon 7:56:58
  10. Patrick Lange 7:58:20

Couldn’t stay awake last night, but just been reading through the comments. Thanks for the great race commentry everyone :+1: Certainly didn’t expect Laidlow to come in second after that bike. Did Neumann change into running kit? Bet he’s kicking himself now, looks like that might have lost him a podium spot. Good on Skipper running into 5th, although would have loved seeing Kienle hold onto 5th.

Also huge congratulations to @SidSnot, great racing there  :+1:

Does raise some questions doesn’t it!

He did change. But he was still out only a few secs after the Norwegians from t2. It didn’t impact his race I don’t think.

Is Iden the first winner not to have podiumed in the previous edition? It doesnt happen often thats for sure.

Joe gets a bit of a bad rep for some reason by some people. He’s fairly outspoken yes, but a really nice guy.

I have volunteered at IMUK many times and the years Joe was racing he was always really appreciative and polite. Even when cheering him on he’d say “thanks mate”.

Humble guy.

Since LvL I think. And he made that point in his finish line interview! :joy:

Sodaro too.

Love to hear the “Big Unit’s” (Yo,Yo,Yo) thoughts on Laidlow’s performance. Granted he was a bit mouthy in lead up to Collins Cup but backed it up today. I was certain he would blow up on run and crash and burn. Fair play to him!

Some race from Laidlow, biking away and was in front most of the race.

2:36 run though from Iden, wow! Wonder how Jan would have done!

The lad I know did 10:09 with a 4:49 bike split.

Incredible race. Those splits are wild. And well done @SidSnot

Impact of Alpha/vaporfly on training and racing?
