Kona Qualifying Diary

Not sure, somewhere in my memory, so could be completely wrong.

800 slots currently allocated, about 1000 to be allocated. Add on the Pro’s, Legacy slots, celebs and auction.

There’s an ST thread on this. Someone made a good point about filling Kona with Legacy, that and/or raffling the slots to participants in cancelled events.

Remember this year’s legacy allocation went out to 2025 and they have emailed them to see who would be prepared to do 2020.

Assuming things are up and running July/August ish I’d imagine they’ll see how big the legacy take up is then spread the rest amongst those races with possibly a later cut off than usual.

So what we are saying here, is that Bolton is going to be a shoe-in?

Let’s assume races pick up again in July. Races scheduled for July/Aug, plus those deferred from earlier will probably get extra slots as they won’t be able to run the full race calendar in 2 months.

But there will be Kona chasers who’ve lost their original race who may pitch up somewhere like Bolton which does not sell out, so it may not actually be much easier.

If your race is sold out, deferred and gets extra slots then chances will be much greater.

Big unknown is who can keep fitness/motivation and also variations on ‘lockdown’ between countries as some may be able to ride/run outside, others may not.

Time to put a cheeky fiver on Lionel for Kona with his fully equipped pain cave…:grinning:

I think it could make races like Bolton more competitive, as people move their entries across; lots of unknowns though.

Our paths may have crossed then… I did BFA, IMCO and Div1/Div2 stuff for a fair while… before that Windsurfer one design in the days of Naish and Cabrinha, but that’s going waaaaaay back!

Jeezus - imagine the training/physiological hole Lionel might put himself into with no racing? He’ll probably decide to do a deca or something mad by July

When were you racing? I raced in late 80’s early 90’s with UKBSA on course boards, against people like Barry Edgington, Chris Lovelock, Kev Greenslade, we used to race with the IMCO fleet. I also raced BFA slalom series with Mark Woods, Peter Hart, Duncan Coombes, Guy Cribb.

I was also a pretty handy speed sailor, won Weymouth speedweek twice… unfortunately I am now too light to be any good. I still race slalom boards occasionally and can still hold my own against the Amateur fleet.

hah… I know a lot of those guys!.. Peter Hart (or Feet Apart as he was lovingly known) stayed at our house a few times when up this way… Barry E I knew quite well… still good friends with his old boss, Guy Chilvers from Bic… I did a RYA development youth training camp with Guy Cribb back in the 80’s at Pitsford, and he got me absolutely bladdered on Special Brew, and a serious bollocking from the RYA! :joy:

I raced seriously from about ‘78 to ‘88, did the IMCO stuff probably around 85 time frame. Did a bit of Div 1 in the Mistral Superlight era, Won one event, but usually mid pack. I was too light for most conditions, so only went well when it was flukey, and was up on the plane before anyone else!

I then moved to Plymouth, and got completely obsessed with anything with less than 60ltrs of bouyancy, and spent many a happy hour getting pummelled at Bigbury and Bantham.

I worked for several years part time for one of the bigger windsurfing shops in the UK (Wentworth Action Sports) in the East Mids.

On the subject of speed week, I found my old VHS tapes a while back, including one of Laird Hamilton on a ridiculously small speed needle, somehere exotic, and it reminded me of Weymouth…

Here’s me a LONG way back… early 80’s i’d imagine… certainly chest harness days, and Div2 and 6.4m2 regatta sail pre full length battens

Looks like Graham Water

Was Ben Oakley the RYA coach? Those RYA youth camps were an alcoholic haze. I raced 1986 to 1994 then 2011 to 2015

That’s me now

Loved Bigbury and Bantham, sailed there in 1.5 mast high waves, biggest and scariest conditions I ever sailed in. I wonder now how / why I did it.

Puts the Ironman swim into perspective

I’m guessing the Fast Forward Video

I was trying to decide if it was Grafham or Rutland… gut feels says you’re right

We used to go to Bantham as kids; good days.

Yep… Ben Oakley…that’s a name i’ve not heard in a while!

I’ve been beaten senseless at Bigbury more than once!.. frightened myself a few times there too when it was big!

And yep… it was the Fast Forward vid… i’ve got theTiga rap and roll one here too!

Just popping in here for the memories.
