Kona Qualifying Diary

Yep - that’s what makes it so frustrating and so exciting.

The CTL levels are interesting as I’m sitting on a CTL of 72 at the moment with 7 hours a week. Purely running and cycling for duathlon purposes after reading this there is a voice saying it could be time for long course race no. 11

Is that every session at close to 100% then?
Get Bolton entered - should suit a whippet like you

I would say wash session is 75-90%. I did the very first IM Bolton at Rivinington Pike where the mile markers on the run were stolen and they ran out of fluids on the bike. Happy days

That’s pretty impressive for 7hrs per week, and certainly suit shorter course races. I would guess that some endurance work would be required for IM. The challenge will be learning to run and ride slower

One rest day a week…!

The guy who got the most out of himself over the full distance Ive ever known religiously had two… but he was a virtual millionaire and didn’t work.

Your race is early… don’t snap now

Rabbi triathlete married to a priest?

Ish … Italian property developer from Chester… not sure they were the same person …!

Had a 10k bike, a power meter and a coach … before they existed.

Some very strange training methods and he liked a red wine or three…

Two rest days a week though… huge over achiever looking at the numbers.

Had the old ‘push through, you’re being a pussy’ vs ‘sometimes the best session you can have is a rest’ debate on Friday. Was feeling ragged, tired and not hitting session targets. I’ve put a big month in (will pull and share numbers later) and swing towards the latter.

Took the whole weekend off, did other stuff, couple of lie ins, take away Saturday night. What normal people do at the weekend in other words.

It turned out to be the right call, fizzing with enthusiasm and energy today, and nailed the morning’s swim and 2 hour bike.

Now wondering whether to build this ‘2 day break’ into training plan rather than when forced. What’s everyone else’s regular rest day pattern?

I’ve been moving away from “regular” rest recently, as I used to take Saturday, or Sunday off.
But now I take the dog out for a 30-50 minute easy jog, then sometimes swim Sunday PM (plus the ride and long run, if I don’t have the kids)

I tend to find my rest day is now Thursday, or Tuesday, as Monday I usually feel okay, but then it catches me by Tuesday.
Thursday is usually a case of "…well, I rode 4 hours yesterday, and swam, so I can have a beer and pizza tonight, which is better than 3*2M repeats  "

Personally i’d be tempted not to plan the rest days into the schedule, but to have them ‘floating’ for when you need it. That way when you have a week like you have now, you don’t feel bad dropping a few sessions when you realy need it. As opposed to guessing when you’re feeling the load - theoretically you could rest at the wrong time, then force yourself through a rough patch a couple of weeks later (when your body is feeling crap for whatever reason) because it’s not in the programme.

Sounds like you made the right decision with a rest. But the life of ‘normal’ people probably isn’t best either i.e. being relatively sedentary, overweight and eating takeaway frequently! I mean, there are loads of overweight people at my gym, let alone those that never go near them.

when I’m in ‘normal’ training I would consider Mondays as rest but that would still include a swim in the morning & some core/S&C work in the evening.
Basically nothing aerobically taxing.

Friday’s, pretty much without fail, even if I’ve missed days during the week due to work etc.
I still cycle to work but the ride home is really chilled out as I know I’m not doing anything when I get back.

Not that I’m training that much right now but I’m liking Tuesday off completely and Friday get whatever sessions done morning or lunchtime leaving the evening free

This. I’m amazed at people who can SWIM on a Friday night at 2030…mentioning no names @adam :rofl:

I’d say that’s the perfect interval run training session opportunity. Drop him off, 50 mins speed session, pick him up. All sweaty and embarrassing .

It’s where they hold the local Park Run! I already drop them at Breakfast Club 2x a week in my cycling kit

It’s the perfect time. Normally get a lane to myself.

Everyone else is off being all social and like
