‘Legendary’ ads from yesteryear

This started as a sub-plot on the Politics thread, but I thought it was worth a thread of its own.

It started with this…

And here is the original ad…

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

Some replies included links to the adverts…

= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =

And I’ve picked a few links for some of the other suggestions…

Hamlet - Photo booth

Hamlet - Golf Bunker

Hamlet – Carlos Fandango
(Heard that name in a meeting yesterday, as a reference to something flashy but not practical.)

John Smiths

Carling Dambusters

Shake ‘n’ Vac

Charlie says

Mike

And in a similar vein

Coast Guard

Tunes

The Tunes one would lead me to Vicks…

”Course you can Malcolm.”

End of Part 1…

Part 2

Paging @fruit_thief

”Looks like we’ve over done it with the sherry.”

Which would take me back here…

Guinness have often been in a class of their own.

Dancing man

Swimmer

Empty chair
(Not sure if this ever made it onto UK TV, I got the link from an American forum years ago)

Lynx

That Lynx advert was certainly a step up from this old Insignia one.

Part 3

Some choices from me…

Yellow Pages - “I were right about that saddle tho”

Hovis - “Real butter for tea”

The 70s in a bottle

Before ‘Point Break’ there was Old Spice – The mark of a man.

”Everyone is a fruit and nutcase"

Texas – ”It takes time to chew”
(But no time at all to remove your teeth/fillings.)

Ben & Mary

Cadburys Cream Egg

”No, Luton Airport”

”The ice melts.”

”Just one Cornetto!”

And the Boddington’s version.

Oxo Mum – ”Remember Preston?”

BT

”An ology”

”Not what you’d call all the rage.”

Pizza Hut

Levis

Blind Man

Laundrette

Honda Cog

Fire and Ice :sunglasses:
(Again, not sure if this made UK TV, as it was a ‘Prime Time’ Superbowl Commercial.)

Interesting seeing in that short time span move from grunge to club in mainstream culture - early 90’s music moved along at a pace, partic in electronic music :headphones:

Thanks for setting this up @Paul_L there are some crackers here

On iplayer there is a fantastic TV Documentary Series of 5 programmes called washes whiter. It charts the development of British TV ads from the 50s through I think to the 90s. Pretty much all the ads above are discussed; in many cases by the ad agency who created them.

It is absolutely fascinating; a real insight on how the country changed in that period and how this is reflected in its adverts. I really can’t recommend it highly enough  .
