I have the CEP ones, they are a bit too long, I fold them over at the top. I use them mainly for bramble and nettle protection
Used to use them but unless as @FatPom says there is the risk of nettles or brambles, I don’t bother these days
I think I might still have some that I’ll never use again.
Moved to compression socks so calf guards became unnecessary.
Happy to send your way if they haven’t been chucked, but can’t check until tomorrow as we have a student staying in the room
Thanks @Cobbie.
Would you recommend compression socks over calf guards? I presume they serve the same purpose without the hassle of another item of clothing?
I use calf guards so I can wear them under my wetsuit, can’t do that with socks.
As @jeffb says, you can wear them under your wetsuit. Other than that, compression socks are better but not quick to put on in transition.
Being honest, I’ve probably not thought about calf guards for 15 years so my memory is more than hazy. They were definitely a fad in the late noughties.
I also have a vague but nagging thought that they infringed some sort of rule but the specifics won’t come to mind (and I could easily be getting confused with something else).
I still use compression socks for hiking, they definitely work for me.
If you can stand the suspense until about 9am, I’ll have a rummage in the spare room once the student is out.
I’ll occasionally wear compression socks for recovery bimbling about, but always prefer a proper running sock over my feet when on the run leg.
My brother bought me a pair of calf guards for IM France & I wore them at most events since primarily as it meant an area I didn’t have to put sun cream on . I binned them the other weekend after they slipped down to my ankles on the 5k leg of the Harlech Duathlon…they’d only lasted since June 2010
@fatbuddha will know for sure but I’m pretty certain you can’t wear them for a pool based sprint tri swim leg.
You can’t wear calf guards in a non wetsuit swim, pool or OW I think, fairly sure we weren’t allowed at Nice as I put them on in T1
I personally prefer guards myself as I think they’re easier to get on.
+1 for the sun protection as well, another reason I use them. Also if I’m running on the moors through the heather they give a bit of protection.
I use calf guard over compression socks in ultras because carrying and changing a short pair of socks is it a lot easier. It is also less likely to induce the ’ FUCK, FUCK, I’VE GOT CRAMP’ dance
Just to confirm that calf guards, or any form of lower leg and foot covering, aren’t allowed in tri swims when wetsuits are banned - same goes for arm warmers.
@APM … Message me your address and I’ll pop them in the post
I should add that these calf guards have been round O till O.
Does the provenance of a prestigious event add anything? Might they one day be taken lovingly into the Repair Shop?
Thanks mate. I’m going to do a little more research and will ping you a DM on completion!
No worries, I’ll put them back in the drawer!
I wear compression socks for runs over an hour.
Like todays;
PITA to put on, wouldn’t use them per se in a long distance triathlon, although I’ve managed before somehow!
Pooch looks impressed!
Which hospital did you nick them from??
So knees are allowed, no matter how knobbly?
I just want to establish the ground rules…
Knackered knobbly knees
Knurled knackers
Make sense?
Amen brother.
