Momentous event cancellation and lack of refund

I transferred to Cascais 2020 after Lanza got binned. Then whe they put the date of Cascais back I transferred to 2021.
On Monday when they announced that this year was off altogether they also announced that next year’s event is going to be pushed a further 2 weeks back to 23rd October. This was at eth end of the email.

Terms & Conditions: If the above option is not suitable, please contact cascais@ironman.com before November 1, 2020 at 11:59 p.m. CET to apply for an event credit voucher valid through December 31, 2021, then redeemable for a refund. Dates are subject to any related Covid-19 restrictions.

First time I’ve ever heard IM considering refunds. TBH I’ll probably keep my entry for 2021 I the hat but I’d originally entered hoping for late summer sunshine but the weather there at this time of year can be pretty hit and miss and it makes it a VERY long season if it actually goes ahead.
I’m also beginning to feel concerned about the possibility that next year may also feature a lot of cancelled events – especially the big mass participation ones. Is there a point at which IM as a business starts to fall over?

This would be why I would be taking up a refund option if I had one, for either of my two full Ironman entries

Fortunately I had a quiet year planned this year, so the only thing that’s rolled forward (twice now) is the Summer Fan Dance; was July, then Sept, now moved to Jan as the Winter edition. We all know there’s no chance they will be able to hold it in January at this rate. Wales are talking about another Firebreak after Christmas :man_shrugging:

The London Pantomine Horse Race has been postponed from 13 December to March 2021.

Oh no it hasn’t. :grinning:

If I can I am going to book Finland, however, need my voucher first

Given what happend this year, and what we learned about Corona, I would say that events from June to September should be safe, Hopefully Lanza at the end of May will be OK, but date is risky. I would be pretty worried that Late October events will be at risk too

That location in Finland looks nice, just wondering about travel with my bike and weather, but at least it shouldn’t be 35c.

What about Thun, Matt, although I think it’s nearly full?

Thun will be a wonderful race, I love the Bernese Oberland, it will be a magnificent, but challenging bike route, The lake is also pretty cold so guarantee a wetsuit swim. However, it is one week after Challenge Roth, so I’ll have to give it a miss this year. Finland is the only event that looks good and still has places

Cases by local area now on the dashboard, not seen this before. Can really zoom into your area & it’s 400+/100,000 for mine.

Edit: Arrgg, wrong thread.

We’re 102 here; largely due to the northern fringes of Bristol and UWE campus being lumped-in with rural South Glos no doubt.

56 where we are in Sarf London

4 cases, 62.7 in N. Warks

Top Trumps?! What figure are we using?

Total cases, 7 day rolling … 3 cases.

83 for East Devon

Am i winning or losing?

Trafford 760 cases, rolling rate 320
Think I’m winning so far :joy:

I think you need to set up some sort of border wall just at the edge of the county.

Similar where I am, this is where the data isn’t really that robust.
Those 4 people could all live in 1 house but due to the low population across a fairly wide geographical area you get bumped into quite a high bracket.

Hmm, 23 cases in my part of sunny Norton, too many local areas dragging us down, and it’s a fairly population dense area, albeit no high-rises etc.

No mention of race refunds or cancellations though :joy:

I am slowly coming to the acceptance that 2021 may be similar to 2020, but I need the anchor point of an event or adventure to look forward to. So with that in mind I am contemplating a winter Everesting attempt, a weekend gravel ride with wild camp, and maybe a self supported fast-pack hike/ultra in Scotland. The last one in particular gets me excited because of all the kit and planning geekery, but last time I did something similar it was bloody miserable so may try and rope a friend in this time.

Yep, a good opportunity to try something different.

This is what i’m focused on… downloaded Komoot, and there are some amazing opportunities to ride off road and wild camp, from a few hours, to many days.

I’ve ordered a new gravel bike, and my various on bike bags are starting to arrive. First serious target is the King Alfred Way from Winchester over a few days next spring… in the interim maybe will do Peddars way at somepoint with a wild camp overnight just to make it fun… and I fancy the Pennine cycleway from Berwick upon Tweed to Derby over perhaps 7 or 8 days next year if annual leave and spousal approval allows!
